Third Annual Cancer Survivorship Telephone Education Workshop Series, Cancer Survivorship: Living With, Through & Beyond Cancer

This free telephone education workshop series offers cancer survivors and their loved ones practical information to help them deal with concerns and issues that arise after treatment ends. The information discussed during these calls is designed primarily for cancer survivors who have recently completed their cancer treatment, but may also be helpful for those who were treated a long time ago, as well as healthcare professionals.

Part I: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - Care & Wellbeing After Treatment Part II: Tuesday, May 24, 2005 - Managing Longterm Lingering Side Effects Part III: Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - Health Promoting Behaviors: Things You Can Do

All of the workshops in this series will take place on Tuesdays, from 1-2 p.m. ET (Eastern Time).

These workshops are free - no phone charges apply. To register, simply go to the CancerCare web site at http://www.cancercare.org/Feedback/Feedback.cfm?r=21

This program is a collaborative effort between CancerCare, the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, the Intercultural Cancer Council, Living Beyond Breast Cancer and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.

AACR Seeking Applications for Scientist <-> Survivor Program

When the American Association for Cancer Research launched the Scientist<->Survivor Program(r) in 1999, AACR made a commitment to fostering mutually beneficial and enduring partnerships among leaders of the cancer survivor and patient advocacy and scientific communities. Held each year in conjunction with the AACR Annual Meeting, the Scientist<->Survivor Program(r) offers advocates an exposure to cutting-edge research and an opportunity to meet prominent researchers and fellow advocates from around the world.

To build upon this longstanding commitment and broaden its collaboration with a wider audience of patients, survivors, and advocates, the AACR established a department of Survivor and Patient Advocacy. In the coming months, we will be working on our existing efforts in this area-the Scientist<->Survivor Program(r) at the Annual Meeting and the Public Forum-as well as launching new programs and initiatives.

The 7th Annual Scientist<->Survivor Program(r) at the Annual AACR Meeting will take place April 15-19, 2005 in Anaheim, Calif. Applications for the program are now online at: http://www.aacr.org/2005am/2005scientistsurvivors.asp

Commission on Cancer Releases New Cancer Program Standards

The Commission on Cancer announces the availability of its Cancer Program Standards, 2004. These standards will be required for use by all CoC approved cancer programs beginning Jan. 1, 2004. The standards form the foundation for quality cancer care and ensure that cancer patients seen at CoC-approved cancer programs have access to the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients and their families throughout their cancer experience.

Currently, there are more than 1,400 CoC-approved cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico. The new standards were designed with input from the participating cancer programs, which treat 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. Major changes have resulted in a publication that avoids micromanagement and allows flexibility for all cancer programs based on local resources, structure, and needs. Commendation ratings have been established for nine standards (25 percent), and the manual format includes a purpose statement for each chapter, the definition and requirement for each standard, specification by category, documentation required, and the rating guideline for each standard.

For more information and a complimentary electronic copy of Cancer Program Standards 2004, visit http://www.facs.org/cancer/coc/programstandards.html

To order a printed copy of the 2004 standards, visit the ACS Publications and Services Catalog at http://www.facs.org/commerce/2003/catsplash.html

Make The Promise

On behalf of Lance Armstrong and the Tour of Hope cancer community partners, Baylor College of Medicine, the Cancer Center and the Intercultural Cancer Council are writing to ask you to Make the Promise--a personal commitment to learn about cancer clinical trials--and encourage your friends to do the same.

The Tour of Hope is cross-country cycle relay that begins in Los Angeles on October 1 and ends in Washington, DC on October 9, with a triumphal entry onto the White House Ellipse. Lance Armstrong will kick off the Tour in Los Angeles and he will lead the team of 20 cyclists onto the Ellipse for the grand finale. Lance will also join the team at several points along the way.

The team of 20 cyclists were chosen from among 1,200 applicants and each and every one of them has an inspirational cancer story. You can read about them on the Tour of Hope web site. (http://www.tourofhope.org)

A fleet of US Postal Service trucks will accompany the Tour cross country, collecting Promises to be delivered by Lance and the Team on October 9th onto the Ellipse. The goal is to present 250,000 signed Promises to officials in Washington, DC in support of cancer research. So far, more than 60,000 have been signed. We have just a few days left, so we have a long way to go to achieve our goal and really need your help.

Please take a moment now to Make the Promise and learn more about the Tour of Hope by logging on to . . .

Thank you.

Cancer Program Survey Results of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer

We just received the results from our cancer program survey performed by the Commission on Cancer on October, 16, 2003. Our Overall Rating was 1, the highest possible rating. We achieved a rating of 1 in each of the 41 standards including: program leadership, clinical management, inpatient and outpatient care, research, cancer registry, outreach, and support services. Of the 1178 hospitals surveyed, only 27 percent were able to accomplish a perfect score. We were awarded a full Three Year Approval with no recommendations.

THANK YOU for participating in our cancer program activities and survey process. This was the result of three years of hard work, and we appreciate your contributions. We look forward to future successes based on our efforts to improve cancer care and coordination.

Thanks again,
