Cain Foundation News and Events

October 2005

Educational Outreach - Oct. 12-14

  • The Cain Foundation Laboratories recently hosted several groups of gifted and talented Spring Branch ISD third grade students interested in learning about neuroscience research.   The students demonstrated exceptional maturity and intellectual curiosity as they toured through the labs.  They received hands-on demonstrations about brain anatomy, light microscopy, cell biology, brain EEGs, electrophysiology and much more.  We greatly enjoyed the children's visit.

below is some feedback from the children's teachers:

What an incredible experience we had!  The parents cannot stop thanking us for the opportunity, and their children cannot stop talking about everything they saw.  One mom even cried when I met with her.  She said it meant so much for her son to go to Baylor and be around all those "important and smart people."

She is only one.  Yesterday, I met with 25 sets of parents individually, and every single one of them thanked me and just wanted to know more about the trip.

One parent told me that his daughter made up her mind to go to Rice and is going to work really hard to keep making A's so she can go there.  The dad's eyes just welled up with tears when I told him that he needed to keep supporting and encouraging his daughter.  He is an engineer, and he told me that he has always encouraged his daughter to excel in Math and Science, but to have a professor from Rice tell his daughter to keep working and taking math and science courses was so meaningful to his daughter.

Another mom told me that her son kept talking about the experience of seeing a human brain and she said that he told her that he needed to keep studying so he could become a neurologist and help people with Alzheimer's disease.

Another mom who does not speak English, and who is economically disadvantaged told me that this was the first time her daughter told her the whole trip was the most amazing trip she ever took, and that she wanted to have a lab coat so she can practice being a doctor.  She told me that this is what she wants for Christmas!

Several parents are asking for copies of the pictures of their children in lab coats at Rice and at Baylor.  Some are even sending them to grandparents in other states.   The parents are all so thrilled that their children participated in this trip.

I could keep telling you and telling you stories of how the trips have impacted our students.  Words cannot express how much we appreciate all your efforts and the time you took to coordinate everything.  Every single child gained so much from the experience.  All the people that we met at Rice and at Baylor were genuinely kind and helpful, and enthusiastic towards our students.

  • A team of Cain Foundation colleagues recently worked out for the 2005 Houston Muscular Dystrophy Association Stride and Ride event to raise money for MDA research.  Over $60,000 was collected in the Houston area.  Way to go guys!
