Clinical Research
Close integration of the Breast Care Center with the basic and translational science program at Baylor is a unique feature of the program. Results learned in the laboratory can be rapidly translated to improvements in patient care. Clinical research in the Smith Breast Center ranges from studies of hereditary breast cancer, prevention, and new imaging techniques to improved surgical and medical treatments.
Clinical Research Areas
Patients seen in the Breast Care Center have the opportunity to participate in a wide array of state-of-the-art nationally and locally initiated, clinical studies and trials focused on prevention and treatment.
General research areas are as follows:
- Adjuvant therapy trials carried out by the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP)
- Clinical trials of new selective estrogen receptor modulators
- Studies of new biologically based therapies, such as inhibitors of the EGF receptor family (IRESSA)
- Trials of new chemotherapeutic agents
- Prognostic and predictive molecular profiling
- Trials of promising agents for breast cancer prevention
- Trials evaluating the role of Herceptin in early breast cancer
