Patient Care
The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine provides women a single, state-of-the-art resource focused exclusively on preventative breast care and the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and breast disease.
Recognized as one of the top breast centers in the world, we offer a highly acclaimed team of breast care specialists and a comprehensive range of services all in one convenient location, including:
- Prevention and early detection, including routine mammography screenings
- Genetic testing and counseling, identifying and treating those with a predisposed genetic risk for breast cancer
- Diagnostic evaluation, including breast imaging, image-guided biopsy, and breast cancer diagnosis
- Breast cancer treatment, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and other approaches
- Psychosocial support to help patients and their families through the emotional impact of breast cancer
- Access to National Cancer Institute (NCI) sponsored clinical trials
We emphasize a team concept with close collaboration among all of the different physicians involved in a woman's care, improving patient outcomes and expediting treatment. This is in contrast to the traditional approach where patients consult with different physicians at several locations, often resulting in disjointed care and unnecessary delays in treatment. Statistics show that patients who go to comprehensive breast centers have improved outcomes and greater likelihood of survival compared to those who seek treatment elsewhere.
For women diagnosed with breast cancer, we assign a Patient Care Coordinator to oversee and closely monitor all aspects of your care. This Care Coordinator provides continuity and personal support while ensuring the most efficient and rapid diagnostic care and treatment.
A new breast cancer clinic at Ben Taub Hospital, organized and staffed by physicians from the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine, has also been established to improve breast care for Houston’s underserved women.
