Baylor College of Medicine's goal is to conduct the highest quality research that contributes to the world's biomedical community and to our patients. Baylor's commitment to excellence is evidenced by its national rankings in NIH funding and research expenditures. In the past fiscal year, the College was ranked 7th in NIH funding to medical schools, receiving 498 awards totaling more than $221 million. In addition, Baylor ranks No. 1 nationally in research expenditures in biological science, according to the National Science Foundation annual report "Academic Research and Development Expenditures."

Aggregate extramural funding by Biology of Inflammation Center faculty from federal, state and national foundation sources currently exceeds $12 million annually. While major programs within the Center will initially focus on allergy, asthma, arthritis and autoimmune diseases, key faculty also apply expertise in the areas of cardiovascular inflammation, gastrointestinal inflammation, infection and immunity, leukocyte biology and immunology, neuroinflammatory disorders and transplantation.
