The Biology of Inflammation Center is a groundbreaking initiative at Baylor College of Medicine to establish the leading research, education and patient care center in the world on inflammatory disorders. The study of inflammation offers a wealth of opportunities for impacting biomedical research and health care because it is the basic response behind so many diseases, including allergies, asthma, arthritis and autoimmune diseases, as well as many of the cardiovascular, neuromuscular and infectious diseases. Investigators within the Center will work to elucidate the mechanisms of inflammatory disease, develop novel therapeutics based on that knowledge, and promote the transfer of knowledge from the bench to the patient. Training tomorrow's leaders in biomedical research on inflammation and in the care of patients with inflammatory disorders is a top priority. Approximately 20,000 square feet of contiguous space centrally located within Baylor houses core facilities and programs of the Biology of Inflammation Center. This space has been renovated to provide state-of-the-art research facilities. The Biology of Inflammation Center expects to serve as a prototype for development of similar programs around the country and provides an opportunity for Baylor College of Medicine to help shape the future of biomedical science. Most important, however, is the promise this center holds for the more than 100 million people in this country who suffer from inflammation-related diseases and the pain and dysfunction they cause.
