Holidays at Baylor

Faculty, staff and trainees marked the holiday season by decorating offices, clinics and labs and celebrating with one another. Awards and Recognitions

Ghebre earns award for outstanding science

Dr. Yohannes GhebreDr. Yohannes T. Ghebre, assistant professor of radiation biology in the Department of Radiation Oncology, is the recipient of the 2018 Jo Rae Wright Award for Outstanding Science from the American Thoracic Society. This award is bestowed to investigators who are recognized as "Rising Stars" by the Society. He will receive his award at the 2018 ATS meeting in San Diego in May. The ATS is the largest thoracic society with more than 12,000 local and international participants each year.

Goodman named APA fellow

Dr. Wayne GoodmanDr. Wayne Goodman, professor and chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association in recognition of his dedication to his profession and patients. Goodman and the other inductees will be honored at the 2018 Convocation of Fellows at the APA annual meeting in May in New York City.

Hsu to lead pediatric emergency medicine

Dr. Deborah HsuDr. Deborah Hsu, associate professor of pediatrics, has been appointed as head of the section of pediatric emergency medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor and chief of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Service at Texas Children's Hospital, bringing excellence as a clinician, medical educator and clinical investigator. She starts her new role Jan. 2.

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan named top magnet school

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan Middle School was featured as a top school in the annual report for the Magnet Schools of America out of 4,340 magnet schools across the United States. The feature highlights how the school went from being one of the worst performing schools in Houston to a top rated school when it became a magnet school through the support of BCM. The curriculum at BCMAR focuses on STEM subjects, and the overall goal of the school, part of the College's pipeline program, is to encourage students to pursue careers within the health professions.

Team Launch programs start in January

Team Launch provides innovative, interdisciplinary, team-based learning to prepare participants for success across the broad spectrum of career paths in healthcare and science. Learn more about opportunities starting in January for students, trainees, faculty and staff to participate in this unique program.

Upcoming events focus on connective tissue disorders

The 2018 Houston Regional Symposium on Marfan, Loeys-Dietz and Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes is Saturday, Jan. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the United Way Community Resource Center, 50 Waugh Drive. Several Baylor experts will speak at the symposium, which includes educational sessions and networking opportunities for patients and families. Register online. In addition, a kick-off party for the third annual Marfan Foundation Houston Walk for Victory will be held Jan. 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dave and Buster's, 7620 Katy Freeway. Baylor experts in Marfan syndrome and related disorders will participate in the event and will lead teams for the upcoming walk. RSVP by Jan. 3 to Ilyssa Sealove.

College News

Holiday hours and information

The College will be closed on Christmas and will reopen on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Dining options on campus will be limited next week.
Main Baylor: Tuesday, Dec. 26 - Morrison Café will be open for breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. and lunch from 10 a.m. to noon. Selections will be limited. The Coffee Corner will close three hours early, at 2 p.m. Normal hours on the main campus will resume Wednesday.
McNair Campus: Mary O's is closed today and will close a half hour early Tuesday – Thursday.

BCM BeWell news: Join Getaway to Good Health in 2018

BCM BeWell is continuing its Getaway to Good Health initiative in 2018 to promote healthy activities! Participants will track their steps per day, with the goal of reaching enough steps to walk from Minneapolis, Minn., to Spokane, Wash. Other requirements include completing the 2018 Vitality Health Review and the 2018 Biometric Screening. The challenge will run from Jan. 8 through Nov. 26, 2018. Register by logging into the BCM BeWell portal and clicking "My Challenges" under the "Community" header. For questions, please email wellness@bcm.edu.

Dr. Jeffrey Morgan and other physicians from Baylor and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center organized a private viewing of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" for heart patient Lee Williams, pictured above right.
