Ghebre awarded American Heart Association grant

Dr. Yohannes GhebreDr. Yohannes Ghebre, assistant professor and director of radiation biology research and education in the Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded the American Heart Association Grant-in-Aid funding totaling $154,000. The grant will support his work to investigate the interaction between members of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor family and microRNA in the regulation of vascular pathophysiology.

Hegde earns grant for T cell research

Dr. Meenakshi HegdeDr. Meenakshi Hegde, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center, received an 'A' Award from Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. This four-year, $800,000 award will support her research on T cell therapy for glioblastoma. The new 'A' Award is designed specifically for the early independent career scientist who wants to establish a career in pediatric oncology research.

Rusin receives award for heart defect research

Dr. Craig RusinDr. Craig Rusin, assistant professor of pediatrics - cardiology, was a recent recipient of a Congenital Heart Defect Research Award through a research program funded by the American Heart Association and the Children's Heart Foundation. The award will support his research to develop a new clinical diagnostic tool that can be used to help prevent life-threatening cardio-respiratory arrest events in children with congenital heart defects.

Presentation on caring for LGBT patients Jan. 5

Shane Snowdon, founding director of the Center for LGBT Health and Equity at the University of California - San Francisco, will speak on "Optimizing Care for Your LGBT Patients" Jan. 5 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in room M112 of the DeBakey Building on the main Baylor campus. The event is presented by the Department of Medicine and the Internal Medicine Diversity Council.

Toys for Tots donations

Thanks to all of those throughout the Baylor community who donated to Toys for Tots. Your generous donations of toys filled six tall boxes and are sure to make the holiday season much brighter for hundreds of children!

Getaway to Good Health - Minneapolis

Benefits-eligible employees, lace up your shoes for another fitness challenge by BCM BeWell – this one from New York City, where the last challenge left off, to Minneapolis. The challenge will run Jan. 16 to Nov. 20, with required checkpoints along the way, including completing the 2017 Vitality Health Review, viewing one Health FYI in 2017, creating and checking in to a goal and completing the 2017 Biometric Screening. Join the Getaway to Good Health - Minneapolis challenge by logging in to the BCM BeWell portal and clicking "My Challenges" under the "Community" header. Holiday shuttle schedule

Due to anticipated low ridership, the BCM Shuttle Service will be operating on an abbreviated schedule on Friday, Dec. 23. Only the Red Shuttle Route will be in operation, starting at main Baylor at 6:45 a.m. and making its final stop at main Baylor at 4 p.m. Its route will be main Baylor – Baylor Clinic – Jamail Specialty Care Center – Baylor Medical Center – VA – McGovern.
