Ellis honored as top breast oncologist

Dr. Matthew EllisDr. Matthew Ellis, director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, part of the NCI-designated Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine, is one of 27 breast oncologists across the country being recognized by Forbes as an exemplary physician in the field of breast cancer oncology. Samson presents at diabetes summit

Dr. Susan SamsonDr. Susan Samson, associate professor of medicine - endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, spoke on Dec. 1 at the New York Academy of Medicine for the Diabetes Care Across America: A Series of Transcultural Summits event. The program was organized by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. Her topic was "Toward a Transcultural Program to Optimize Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes Care in Native Americans." Samson will participate in a second summit at the Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education on Dec. 9.

Smith to coordinate AAMC group

Jamie SmithJamie Smith, executive coordinator for the dean of the School of Medicine, was appointed as communications co-coordinator for the Association of American Medical Colleges Deans' Assistant Group. The group represents the administrative and executive assistants to deans in colleges of medicine with the goal of improving communication among all medical schools and supporting deans in achieving their goals.

College earns wellness award

Baylor was selected as one of the winners of the inaugural Bill Baun Excellence in Wellness Award from the Houston Business Coalition on Health, earning an exemplary honor among organizations with more than 5,000 employees. Members of the BCM BeWell team accepted the award at the HBCH Wellness Awards presentation Dec. 5 at the United Way of Greater Houston.

Dec. 14: Trauma care 'Think Tank'

Baylor's Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center, or INSTINCT, led by the Department of Surgery and Dr. Billy Cohn, will host Think Tank: Next-Generation Trauma Care, Thursday, Dec. 14, from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Jaworski Classroom at main Baylor. The event will focus on new concepts and plausible design approaches for critical care patient management interventions. Register online.

Memory Walkers support Alzheimer's research

2017 Memory WalkersCongratulations to the Baylor Memory Walkers for their success at the Houston Walk to End Alzheimer's. The team, led by Baylor professor Dr. Mark Kunik, has raised more than $20,000 for research and services to improve the lives of those with dementia and their caregivers. Help the team reach its fundraising goal of $25,000 by donating online.

Clinical news: Deadline to dispute physician payments from industry

Dec. 31, 2017, is the final day to dispute 2016 industry payments made to physicians reported to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Open Payments Database. This database applies to physicians only. You may view the payments reported under your name online. Detailed instructions on how to dispute a payment can be found on the BCM Intranet under Compliance and Audit Home – Physician Sunshine Act.

Submit nominations for Gold Humanism honor

Nominations are open for the 2018 class of resident and fellow inductees to the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a national organization that promotes humanism in medicine. The Baylor resident and fellow chapter focuses on research, advocacy, education and cultural change within the College community. Nominees will complete a short application; 20 residents and fellows will be selected. Nominations are due by Monday, Jan. 15. Submit nominations online.

Atkinson appointed PA medical director

Dr. Jonnae AtkinsonDr. Jonnae Atkinson, assistant professor of family and community medicine, has been appointed medical director of the Physician Assistant Program in the School of Allied Health Sciences. She will support the program director in ensuring that both didactic instruction and supervised clinical practice experiences meet current practice standards as they relate to the PA role in providing patient care.

New after-hours calls service provider

Please be advised Baylor College of Medicine will be using a new vendor for after-hours call service. The new vendor, Ambs, will be taking over various clinical accounts in a phased approach over the next two to three months.
