Grusak and Rosen named AAAS Fellows

Michael A. GrusakJeffrey M. RosenDrs. Michael A. Grusak and Jeffrey M. Rosen have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Election as a fellow is an honor bestowed on AAAS members by their peers.


Grusak, professor of pediatrics at Baylor and the USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center, was selected for discoveries about the production and accumulation of essential nutrients in plants and their bioavailability in human nutrition and for leadership in his professional societies. Rosen, distinguished service professor of molecular and cellular biology and a member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, was selected for distinguished contributions to the field of mammary gland biology and breast cancer and for training a generation of students and fellows.

Orange honored for arthritis research

Dr. Jordan OrangeDr. Jordan Orange, professor of pediatrics and chief of the immunology, allergy and rheumatology section and director of the Center for Human Immunobiology at Texas Children’s Hospital, has been awarded the 2015 Lee Howley Sr. Prize, given annually by the Arthritis Foundation to recognize team science in action that will lead to a faster cure for arthritis and related diseases. Orange and colleagues identified a new gene mutation responsible for causing a hereditary autoimmune-mediated lung disease and arthritis. The team published the work in an April 2015 issue of Nature Genetics.

Upcoming DocTalks

The next DocTalk is Tuesday, Dec. 1, at noon in McNair conference room A/B with Dr. James Bray, associate professor of family and community medicine, on tips to handle holiday stress. Then on Dec. 7, in Cullen Auditorium, Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan, registered dietitian and assistant professor of internal medicine, will discuss healthy eating and nutrition. Benefits-eligible employees who attend these informal talks, followed by a question-and-answer session, will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Jingle Bell Run

The 2015 YMCA Jingle Bell Run & Walk will take place Sunday, Dec. 13 in downtown Houston. Baylor Sports Medicine will serve as the medical sponsor for this year’s run. Each year, the run and walk raises funds for the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA Annual Campaign. Register here.

Registration open for Intensive Bioethics Course

Early bird, discounted registration is now open for the Intensive Bioethics Course, which will be offered in the spring by The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor and Houston Methodist Hospital. The course is geared toward individuals who encounter complex ethical challenges in the healthcare setting and wish to receive advanced training. Register online.

Holiday toy drive

Baylor is sponsoring a holiday toy drive to benefit the Child Advocates’ Santa’s Wish List Program, which provides new gifts and clothing for children who have been victims of life-threatening abuse or neglect and placed in protective custody. This wish list program serves children from newborns to 18 years. Bring a new and unwrapped gift on the following dates to make the holidays brighter for children in Harris County!

Volunteers needed for depression and anxiety research

Researchers at the BCM Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program are seeking volunteers for clinical trials of new medications. Philanthropy opportunity at the Houston Zoo

Members of the Baylor community who love animals may consider joining the Houston Zoo’s Flock donor club. Flock is for young professionals and encourages involvement for Zoo enthusiasts age 21 and up. Flock members enjoy four exclusive events at the Zoo each year.
