Garber appointed to occupational therapy board

Susan L. Garber, MA, OTR, FAOTA, FACRM, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, was appointed to serve as a Trustee of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation Board, the mission of which is to advance the science of occupational therapy, serving the public interest by supporting occupational therapy research and increasing public understanding of the important relationship between everyday activities, including occupations, and health.

Jarjour elected autonomic society fellow

Dr. Imad Jarjour, associate professor of pediatrics – neurology, recently was named a Fellow of the American Autonomic Society in recognition of his professional accomplishments and exemplary contributions to the field of autonomic physiology and medicine as educator, researcher and volunteer leader. Jarjour also is medical director of the Texas Children's Clinic for Autonomic Dysfunction.

Morales honored for ophthalmology photographs

Joseph Morales, a certified retinal angiographer and medical research photographer in the ophthalmology department, earned several awards from the Ophthalmic Photographers' Society for photographs included in the scientific exhibit at the society's 47th Annual Program, held in Chicago last month. Among his awards was first place in the monochromic photography category for his photograph "Angioid Streaks." Morales also won a second-place prize and two honorable mentions for his photographs.

Compassion and the Art of Medicine Nov. 4 and Nov. 11

Compassion and the Art of Medicine talks will be held Nov. 4 in McMillian Auditorium with Kristen Powers, on her personal journey growing up at risk for Huntington's disease, and Nov. 11 in Cullen Auditorium with Dr. Alisha Kidane, assistant professor of family and community medicine at Baylor and physician at Casa de Amigos, on caring for underserved communities. Both talks are at 12:10 p.m.

Compliance Week Nov 6 - 12

National Compliance and Ethics Week is Nov. 6-12, and the Baylor compliance office will host events across campus to increase awareness of the compliance and ethics efforts at the College and to recognize compliance staff for their important work. Reception honoring Brenner and Walker Nov. 7

A reception honoring Dr. Malcolm Brenner and Dr. Cheryl Walker to celebrate their election to the National Academy of Medicine will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, in Rayzor Lounge. Brenner, founding director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, and Dr. Walker, founding director of the Center for Precision Environmental Health, are both leaders in their fields who have contributed groundbreaking findings. This is an important honor for them and the College.

Team Launch Master Class 2 Nov. 7

Dr. Erik Halvorsen, director of the TMC Innovation Institute will present "Getting to Yes and Dirty Little Tricks: Practical Tips and Negotiation Tactics" Monday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. He will discuss what it means to have a successful negotiation and share his strategies to use in your next personal or professional negotiation. Join Dr. Halvorsen and the Team Launch leadership for a reception at 4:30 p.m. in Cullen. Registration is encouraged but not required. You may share your negotiation war stories with Halvorsen through an online form. Names will be changed if he uses your story in his presentation. Master Classes are a unique opportunity for everyone at Baylor to hone skills needed to work successfully in teams.

Join the Baylor Booty Shakers for Get Your Rear in Gear – Houston, a 5K run/walk for colon cancer awareness. The event is Saturday, Nov. 19, at the McNair Campus and includes a kids' run, a timed run and a walk. Join or donate online.

Tickets are now on sale for Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy presentation of "Let Me Down Easy," a performance, panel and dinner with renowned actress and writer Anna Deavere Smith. A docudrama examining the body as it relates to health and human existence, "Let Me Down Easy" is told through real-life interviews, the unique voices coming together to tell a stunning story of the vulnerability of the body, the resilience of the human spirit and the increasing costs of healthcare. Learning Communities mentors needed

The BCM Learning Communities Program, formerly known as the BCM Student Mentoring Program, is accepting applications for faculty mentor positions for academic year 2017-18. This clinical faculty-led program assists students in their transition into medical school, provides guidance during their pre-clerkship years, facilitates transition to their clerkships and structures career planning. Please see the Faculty Opportunities page for more information and the application form. Applications are due Friday, Nov. 18. Applications open for CVRI pilot project awards

The Cardiovascular Research Institute at Baylor is accepting proposal submissions for pilot awards of up to $25,000 in cardiovascular research that will promote collaboration between multiple investigators and are likely to lead to externally funded grants in the foreseeable future. Applications are due Nov. 14. See the CVRI website for more information.

Several new and revised policies were recently published in the College's Policy and Procedures Manual. They cover Graduate Medical Education, the Faculty Group Practice and compliance issues, including uses and disclosures of protected health information. Getaway to Good Health deadline

The BCM BeWell Getaway to Good Health – NYC challenge ends Nov. 30. Participants must complete all checkpoints to earn BCM BeWell Vitality points. Visit BeWell online for challenge guidelines, including the list of required checkpoints.

DeBakey High School open house

Freshmen students at the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions were welcomed to Baylor on Oct. 25, where they heard from College leadership and a panel of current medical and graduate school students and got a hands-on anatomy lab presentation. See a video of the annual open house.
