Brenner and Walker elected to NAM

Dr. Malcolm BrennerDr. Cheryl WalkerDr. Malcolm Brenner, founding director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital, and Dr. Cheryl Walker, founding director of the Center for Precision Environmental Health at Baylor, both renowned leaders in their respective fields, were elected to membership in the National Academy of Medicine. Goodman honored by OCD foundation

Dr. Wayne GoodmanDr. Wayne Goodman, chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was honored by the International OCD Foundation at its 30th anniversary celebration Oct. 14 in Boston. Goodman helped found the organization in 1986 and served as the inaugural chair of its Scientific Advisory Board. The organization is dedicated to helping anyone impacted by OCD and ending the stigma associated with all mental health issues

Ivanhoe recognized for PM&R contributions

Dr. Cindy IvanhoeDr. Cindy Ivanhoe, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Baylor and attending physician with the TIRR-Memorial Hermann Brain Injury Program, will be awarded the Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for scholarly level of teaching and outstanding performance in physiatric patient care activities that have contributed to the advancement of the field. The award will be presented at the academy’s annual meeting in New Orleans Oct. 22.

Health policy talk on future of healthcare Oct. 25

Baylor's Health Policy Program presents "The Dawn of NextGen Healthcare: Disruption Ahead," with Dr. Greg Stock, a biophysicist, best-selling author, biotech entrepreneur and former director of the Program on Medicine, Technology and Society at UCLA's School of Medicine, Oct. 25 from noon to 1 p.m. in MD Anderson's Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner. He will explore the future of healthcare, including its economic drivers and the role it will play in our lives – from personalized medicine to medical education. Lunch provided.

Domestic violence panel Oct. 26

The Center for Professionalism and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion will sponsor a panel of speakers representing various perspectives of domestic violence, including survivors, healthcare providers, legal advocates, LGBT+ community and policy advocates at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Cullen Auditorium, with a reception at 5:30 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. CME credit will be offered, and 50 BCM BeWell Vitality points for eligible employees.

Mini golf Oct. 27 to benefit Baylor’s Heart Walk team

Take a break from your workday on Thursday, Oct. 27, between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for some mini golf in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor, supporting the Ace of Hearts, Baylor's team in the American Heart Association 2016 Heart Walk. Strut for breast cancer Oct. 28

Tickets remain for Stiletto Strut, a fun and fashionable fundraising event benefitting the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and honoring Dr. Emily Sedgwick, associate professor of radiology and director of breast imaging at the Center. The event is Oct. 28 at Neiman Marcus at the Houston Galleria, with a champagne toast and strut through the Galleria starting at 10 a.m. followed by a runway show at 11:30 a.m. Purchase tickets.

Pediatric Cancer Health Disparities Symposium Nov. 2

The 2016 Pediatric Cancer Health Disparities Symposium is Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bioscience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main St. This event will bring together scientists and other professionals from Baylor and beyond working in a variety of disciplines to increase awareness of the disparities that exist for childhood cancers, stimulate the development of new research and establish a research strategy for addressing key disparities. Update on Alzheimer's Nov. 3; Walk to End Alzheimer’s Nov. 5

November is Alzheimer's disease awareness month, and two upcoming events focus on the disease. The 2016 Update on Alzheimer's Disease is Nov. 3 at the Houston Museum of Natural Science; registration starts at 6:30 p.m., program at 7 p.m. Dr. Joseph Kass, associate professor of neurology and director of Baylor's Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center, and Dr. Melissa Yu, assistant professor of neurology and associate director of clinical operations at the center, will offer updates on Alzheimer's research and patient care. The Walk to End Alzheimer's on Nov. 5 on the University of Houston campus will raise awareness and funds for the disease. Help the Baylor Memory Walkers team show how Baylor is making a difference for Alzheimer's patients and their caregivers by joining the team or donating.
