Resident Lim honored by ACGME

Dr. Jonathan LimDr. Jonathan Lim, an internal medicine resident, is one of four recipients of the David C. Leach Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, recognizing residents and fellows who have fostered innovation and improvement in their residency programs, advanced humanism in medicine and increased efficiency and emphasis on educational outcomes. He will be honored at the 2018 ACGME Annual Educational Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Oct. 21: IBD symposium for patients and providers

The Houston IBD Education Symposium is tomorrow, Oct. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive. Geared toward patients and healthcare professionals alike, topics will include the latest in inflammatory bowel disease research, diet, mental health, surgical interventions and more. Oct. 28: TMC Serves volunteer day for students

TMC Serves is an opportunity for students from throughout the medical center to join together to give back to the Houston community, especially important in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The event is set for Thursday, Oct. 28, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., culminating with a volunteer opportunity at the Houston Food Back. Student participants will receive a free T-shirt. Sign up online.

Oct. 23 - Nov. 3: Lab coat and scrubs recycling event

The second annual lab coat and scrubs recycling event, sponsored by the BCM Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program, is Oct. 23 – Nov. 3. Clean and uncontaminated garments will be accepted in the E-Hallway by the cafeteria at main Baylor.

Nov. 1: Lecture on maternal and child mortality

A lecture on global maternal and child mortality by Dr. Zulfiqar A. Bhutta, co-chair of the Maternal and Child Health Oversight Committee for the World Health Organization's eastern Mediterranean region, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Rice University's Baker Institute. Bhutta, who also is the inaugural Robert Harding Chair in Global Child Health at the Hospital for Sick Children, will speak on "Effective Policies for Scaling Up Care for Mothers and Newborns in Marginalized Populations." Sponsored by Baylor and Rice University; RSVP online by Oct. 27.

Nov. 4: Surgical innovation event

Surgical Collaboration Day 2017 is Saturday, Nov. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Texas Medical Center Institute (TMCx) on the McGovern Campus. Sponsored by Baylor's Department of Surgery, the free event brings together local, national and international surgeons, clinicians, researchers, educators, technology entrepreneurs and others to find cutting-edge solutions for surgical and healthcare needs. The day includes a keynote talk by Baylor's Dr. Joseph Lamelas, a world renowned expert in minimally invasive heart valve procedures, as well as quick-fire presentations and an open-floor exhibition. HR news: Open Enrollment ends Monday, Oct. 23

The 2018 Benefits Open Enrollment period ends Monday, Oct. 23, at 11:59 p.m. Changes or elections made during the Open Enrollment period will be effective Jan. 1, 2018. Human Resources representatives will be available to assist today and Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 018D in the basement of the Jewish Institute Building at main Baylor. Questions? IT news: Cybersecurity Initiative deadline

Anyone who uses a mobile device to access their Baylor email must download and install the Mobile Device Management (MDM) app by Monday, Oct. 23, at 11:59 p.m. If you use VPN or MyApps externally to access College systems and services, you must also download and install the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) App. If the apps are not installed, you will not be able to access College email, systems and services on your mobile or personal devices after the deadline. Step-by-step instructions and instructional videos are available to assist you. Information sessions also are ongoing across campus. Find more information.

BeWell news: focus on mindfulness

The BCM BeWell Mindfulness Matters Challenge is Oct. 30 to Nov. 18 during which participants will use weekly motivational tips and exercises to reflect on their own happiness. Eligible employees can earn up to 350 BCM BeWell Vitality points for participating in the challenge, the last quarterly challenge before the BeWell Medical Premium Reduction deadline. Sign up by Oct. 28. Mindfulness in the workplace will be the focus of a BeWell talk by Laurel Hyle, assistant professor of pediatrics who leads the TCH bioethics program, Wednesday, Nov. 1, at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. Eligible employees will receive 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points for signing in before 12:15 p.m. For more information, email wellness@bcm.edu.

The Board of Trustees approved 21 new and revised institutional policies on Sept. 27 including: 12.2.22 - Access Controls for Personal Mobile Devices; 21.1.06 - Policy Standards for Engaging Employees with Legal Training; 17.2.15 - Third-Party Non-Profit Organization Fundraising and Gift Policy; 02.8.08 - Vacation Policy for Faculty at the Rank of Assistant Professor or Above. Minor modifications were made to other policies; consult Policy Highlights for more information.
