Awards and Recognitions

Zoghbi honored by neurological group

Dr. Huda ZoghbiThe American Neurological Association has awarded Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor in the departments of pediatrics, molecular and human genetics, neurology, and neuroscience and director of the NRI at Texas Children's Hospital, the George W. Jacoby Lectureship. This honor is given every three years by the ANA to a member for meritorious experimental work on any neurologic or psychiatric subject. She will be honored at the ANA's annual meeting in San Diego Oct. 15-17, where she also will present a lecture titled "Using Genetics to Identify Pathways that Regulate Proteins Driving Neurodegeneration."

Baylor recognized for innovation

Baylor College of Medicine was included on the third annual Reuters Top 100 ranking of the world's most innovative universities. The Reuters Top 100 identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries. The ranking is based on proprietary data and analysis of numerous indicators including patent filings and research paper citations. Baylor was ranked No. 44; highlights included research on novel cancer treatment.

Events

Core labs seminar series

The Advanced Technology Cores will host a fall seminar series presented by core lab directors on topics related to emerging technologies. The series launches Oct. 17 with Dr. Michael Beauchamp, director of the Core for Advanced MRI and professor of neurosurgery and neuroscience, on "Imaging the Structure and Function of the Human Brain by MRI." Seminars are held from noon to 1 p.m. in room N315 (Alkek Building); additional seminars include:
-Nov. 7, Dr. Michael Mancini, director of Integrated Microscopy Core
-Dec. 12, Dr. Mary Dickinson, director of Optical Imaging and Vital Microscopy Core

It's walk season! Join Alex's 5k Nov. 4 and other Baylor events

Alex's 5K Run/Walk and Kids' K is Nov. 4 at MacGregor Park. This annual fun run raises money for Autism Speaks and Avondale House in memory of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich. The family-friendly event includes a post-race party and lots of kids' activities. Find more information and register online. Other upcoming events include:

Register for HR management training

Human Resources will offer "Managing to the Mission" Nov. 8 – 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The course is designed for those who are in a management role or on a career track to become a manager. Topics will include leadership assessment, teambuilding, communication skills, effective meeting presentations, delegation, best practices at BCM and an overview of key policies. Register online. Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to schedule your mammogram. The Same-Day Breast Biopsy Program provides same-day mammographic workup and breast biopsy services when needed to reduce anxiety and screening appointments. To learn more, visit the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center.

Domestic Violence Awareness

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Baylor is showing support by encouraging all community members to participate in Wear Purple Day on Thursday, Oct. 19, to acknowledge the more than 100 Texans who lose their lives to domestic violence each year. Learn what you can do to help at the Houston Area Women's Center, the Texas Council on Family Violence or on Baylor's intimate partner violence web page.

MA Appreciation Week

The College celebrates our medical assistants during National Medical Assistants' Week, Oct. 16 - 20. Medical assistants serve as important members of the healthcare delivery team by performing administrative and clinical procedures. Thank you for all you do!

Open enrollment benefits fairs and help sessions

The 2018 Open Enrollment for benefits is underway through Oct. 23. Benefits fairs will be held across campus Oct. 16 – 18 where you can speak directly to vendors about choices you have during open enrollment. See the schedule online. In addition, members of the HR-Benefits team will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in room 018D in the Jewish Institute building basement on the main campus to help you enroll and answer benefits questions on Oct. 19, Oct. 20 and Oct. 23. Did You Know: Hearing aids covered by Baylor insurance

Employees who have United Healthcare insurance through BCM are covered for hearing aids and related supplies, up to $2,500 per calendar year. Participants are limited to one hearing aid (one per ear) every 24 months. For more information about your hearing aid benefits, log into your UHC account and view your "coverage and benefits" for "medical equipment." Advisors needed for budding scientists!

Volunteers are needed as advisors for middle school students from Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan and Baylor College of Medicine Biotechnology Academy at Rusk who are participating in upcoming science fairs. Advising involves helping students revise their research questions, conduct research, interpret data, etc. Advising sessions are held from October to January from 8 to 10 a.m. during the Saturdays with Scientists program of the Center for Educational Outreach held on the McGovern Campus. Advisers may sign up for one day or multiple days. To volunteer or for more information, contact Beatriz Perez-Sweeney or Katherine Harris.
