Corrigan named best legal counsel in Houston
 Robert Corrigan, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Baylor, has received a Houston Business Journal 2015 Best Corporate Counsel Award. Corrigan was the winner in the small legal department category. He was recognized in particular for his work on two complex joint venture agreements – one between Baylor and CHI St. Luke’s and the other between Baylor and Miraca Holdings. Honorees were nominated by their peers and then a judging panel selected the finalists and winners based on submitted applications, which included letters of recommendations from CEOs. Corrigan and other winners were honored at a ceremony Sept. 29 at Hotel ZaZa.
Ellis gives breast cancer award lecture
 Dr. Matthew Ellis, director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and a McNair Scholar at Baylor, recently gave the 2015 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award lecture in San Francisco. McLaughlin elected to state allied health board
 Dr. Robert McLaughlin, dean of Baylor’s School of Allied Health Sciences, was recently elected to a two-year position on the board of directors of the Texas Society of Allied Health Professions and was inducted Sept. 25. The society is dedicated to enhancing and promoting education, research and clinical practice of allied health professionals in the state.
Alkek Award to Justino
 An additional 2015 Alkek Award for Pilot Projects in Experimental Therapeutics was awarded to Dr. Henri Justino, associate professor of pediatrics, section of cardiology, for his project “Pre-clinical Evaluation of a Stent-mounted Pulmonary Valve Targeted to Pediatric Congenital Heart Disease.” The award supports preclinical translational research necessary for developing promising therapeutic targets, devices or diagnostic assays for clinical applications. Other recipients of the 2015 award were previously announced. It is made possible through a generous gift from the Alkek Foundation.

DocTalk Oct. 12
 The next DocTalk is Monday, Oct. 12, at noon at the Jamail Specialty Care Center, room 120, featuring Dr. Waqar Qureshi, professor of medicine, on “That gut feeling … when to see a doctor.” He will offer an overview of stomach and colon health. Evening with Genetics Oct. 13
The next seminar in the Evening with Genetics series is “Puberty and Sexual Development in Teens with Disabilities” on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Houston. It will be presented by Dr. Adiaha Spinks-Franklin, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital. The program is free but registration is required. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 with music by the TMC Orchestra.
New room for Oct. 14 Ben Taub flu vaccines
Flu vaccines offered by the Occupational Health Program at Ben Taub Hospital on Oct. 14 are being moved to a new location – Room 4SP 20002 (fourth floor conference room) – still from 2 to 4 p.m.
Compassion lectures
There will be a Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture today at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium on “When Doctors Become Patients.” The next talk in the series is Friday, Oct. 16, also at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen, on “Treating the Patient, Not the Disease,” presented by Dr. Deepa Somcio, assistant professor of family and community medicine.

- Nov. 14: The fifth annual Alex's 5K and Kids 1K Run/Walk is Saturday, Nov. 14, at 8 a.m. at Tom Bass Regional Park. The event honors the life of Alex Jamrich, son of Dr. Milan Jamrich, professor of molecular and cellular biology, and his wife, Kathi Mahon, a former Baylor faculty member, and raises money for local and national autism programs. Domestic Violence Awareness
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Baylor is showing support by encouraging all community members to wear purple, the color of domestic violence advocacy, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to acknowledge the more than 100 Texas women who lose their lives to domestic violence each year. Learn what you can do to help by visiting the Houston Area Women’s Center website, the Texas Council on Family Violence or Baylor's web page on Intimate Partner Violence.
