Krenciute earns research support

Dr. Giedre KrenciuteDr. Giedre Krenciute, postdoctoral associate in pediatric hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center, received a $150,000 Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Young Investigators Grant funded by Northwestern Mutual. The two-year grant will support her research into cancer immunotherapy for pediatric solid tumors and brain tumors. She was one of six researchers nationwide to receive a grant of this size funded by Northwestern Mutual.

Poplack honored for career achievements

Dr. Michelle BarajazDr. David Poplack, professor of pediatrics and director of Texas Children's Cancer Center, recently received the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was presented to Poplack for his incredible contributions and dedication to pediatric cancer research for more than 40 years. He is a founding member of the Hope on Wheels Medical Advisory Committee and continues to make significant impacts in the field.

Singh's research featured online

Dr. Hardeep SinghDr. Hardeep Singh, associate professor of medicine – health services research and chief of the Health Policy, Quality and Informatics Program at the Houston VA Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, is featured on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality website for his significant contributions to the health services research field. The purpose of the profile series is to highlight AHRQ-funded researchers whose work has led to vital changes in healthcare policy and notably influenced research and practice.

Events

Today: Diversity Showcase and Compassion and the Art of Medicine

Today's events include the Diversity and Inclusion Showcase from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge, where College groups will highlight their activities and awards will be presented for the "Inclusion in Action" videos, and the Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, with Dr. Sherri Onyiego, assistant professor of family and community medicine at Baylor, and husband Leonid Onyiego who will discuss their nonprofit that provides clean water access to people in Kenya.

Metastatic breast cancer panel Oct. 10

Baylor is supporting breast cancer awareness by lighting its main Cullen building in pink for the week of Oct. 10, and will be hosting a special panel discussion in honor of Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Oct. 13. The lunchtime panel discussion will highlight Baylor's work in the treatment of breast cancer and metastatic research. Panelists will include Dr. Angela Coscio, Dr. Xiang "Shawn" Zhang and Dr. Suzanne Fuqua. The panel is open to the public and will begin at noon in Kleberg Auditorium. In addition to the panel, T-shirts will be on sale to support metastatic breast cancer research.

Open Enrollment benefits fairs

The 2017 Open Enrollment period is Oct. 10 – 24, and annual benefits fairs will be held Oct. 10 – 12. Come by to talk directly with benefits staff and external vendors about available options and services. In addition, Open Enrollment information meetings will be held across campus. Eligible employees will earn 150 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending a meeting. For those unable to attend in person, live-stream Zoom sessions will be offered Friday, Oct. 14, or Thursday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 2 p.m. Find more information about Open Enrollment meetings, benefits fairs and Zoom sessions. 'This American Family' benefitting Duncan Cancer Center

The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center has been chosen as the beneficiary of an original musical play titled "This American Family," a story celebrating women of diverse cultures whose individual courage, character and faith pave the way to family healing, currently being staged at Houston's Queensbury Theatre. Tickets are available for the Friday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m. performance and the Sunday, Oct. 16, 2 p.m. performance. Buy tickets online.

Leadership training from HR

Human resources is enrolling for "Leading through Influence," Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the McGovern campus. This one-day course is designed to empower faculty with techniques on hiring, conflict resolution and employee morale and includes a tool to help understand an individual's unique working style. Join the student-organized Wellness 5K Oct. 22

The 2016 BCM Wellness 5K and Kids 1K event will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at 8 a.m. This student-organized event benefits the Student Wellness Program and other healthy initiatives. Check-in is at the TMC Commons and the race starts in front of Baylor's Cullen building. This is a timed event, and runners can join as individuals or teams. There are lots of fun race-day activities, and there is even child care for participants who want to bring their youngsters. Register online.

CMMR pilot awards

Pilot project funding of up to $25,000 is available from the Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research to support research in the area of innovative or functional examination of microbiome influences on host health, with a focus on collaborative projects. Apply for AAMC quality improvement/patient safety teaching program

Baylor faculty members are invited to apply for the Association for American Medical Colleges' Certificate Program in Teaching Quality Improvement and Patient Safety. This two-part faculty development program developed by the AAMC is designed to assist academic medical centers in building strategies, infrastructure and faculty prepared in leading quality improvement and patient safety projects with learners across the continuum. Part 1, a boot camp in the principles of quality improvement and patient safety for faculty with interest in the field but in need of formal training, will be held at Baylor Dec. 1-2. Part 2 will be held in spring 2017. The application deadline is Oct. 24. Learn more and apply online.

Calling all artists!

It's almost time for the annual Graduate Student Council Art Show, set for Nov. 7 – 11. Art submitted by the Baylor community is displayed and put up for auction, with 40 percent of proceeds benefiting the Arts in Medicine program at Texas Children's Cancer Center. Submissions of art, including paintings, photography, crafts and jewelry, are being accepted for the show until 5 p.m. Oct. 21. Find more information online or email anwebb@bcm.edu.
