Jafar-Nejad earns glycobiology award

Dr. Hamed Jafar-NejadDr. Hamed Jafar-Nejad, associate professor of molecular and human genetics, was selected as the winner of the 2017 Glycobiology Significant Achievement Award given by Oxford University Press, publisher of Glycobiology. This award is presented to a new or mid-career scientist who has made a key discovery during their early career with potential impact on the glycoscience community.

McLaughlin to lead allied health group

Dr. Robert McLaughlinDr. Robert McLaughlin, dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, was selected as president-elect of the Texas Society for Allied Health Professions at the society's recent annual conference held at Baylor. Currently chair of the TSAHP Research Committee, McLaughlin will serve as president of the professional organization during the 2018-19 academic year.

Rao honored as neurocritical care leader

Dr. Chethan RaoDr. Chethan Venkatasubba Rao, assistant professor of neurology – vascular critical care, was awarded a Presidential Citation from the Neurocritical Care Society for his work as a member of the society's research committee. He will take over as chair of the committee this month, focusing on promoting the research efforts of neurointensivists and organizing the Neurocritical Care Research Network conference next October.

Strutt presents course in Guatemala

Dr. Adriana StruttDr. Adriana Macias Strutt, associate professor of neurology and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was an invited professor at a three-day course on neurological and psychiatric conditions in adolescence and young adulthood at the Universidad Del Valle in Guatemala City, Guatemala, this month. The course is part of the first Master's level program in neuropsychology in Central America. In addition to teaching in the program, Strutt also has mentored three students.

Oct. 10: Evening with Genetics on Down syndrome

The Evening with Genetics seminar on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Children's Museum of Houston will offer a review of state-of-the-art medical care and new research discoveries for children with Down syndrome. Speakers are Dr. Kathryn K. Ostermaier, associate professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Hsiao-Tuan Chao, instructor and postdoctoral research fellow in pediatric neurology. Light refreshments at 6:30; seminar at 7 p.m. The event is free but registration required.

Oct. 11 Bake sale and donation drive benefiting LGBT youth

In recognition of National Coming Out Day, the BCM Pride student group will host a bake sale and clothing and toiletries donation drive Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the cafeteria at main Baylor. BCM Pride also will sell rainbow caduceus pins for $10. All donations and proceeds will go to the Pink Giraffe Houston, an organization that provides resources to homeless LGBT youth.

Oct. 12: DocTalk on flu

Dr. Pedro Piedra, professor of virology and microbiology, will offer important information on influenza, including what's expected this flu season and what you need to know about the flu vaccine, at DocTalk, noon, Thursday, Oct. 12, in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks by Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Oct. 12: Texas Trailblazers series with Cohn

Dr. Billy Cohn, professor of surgery, will give a talk as a part of the Texas Trailblazers series Oct. 12 at JLabs at the TMC Innovation Institute on the McGovern Campus. Cohn will discuss his successful medical device innovations with a focus on thinking outside of the laboratory to see that innovation is all around you. The event starts with networking at 4:30, followed by the presentation and a Q&A. Register online.

Oct. 12: Using EMR successfully

Two presentations on Oct. 12 will focus on making electronic medical records a successful part of the physician-patient relationship. Presenters are Drs. Lolita Alkureishi and Wei Wei Lee of the University of Chicago.
-"Medicine in the Digital Age: Using Technology to Enhance the Patient Relationship and Communication," 12:15 p.m., room M112 at main Baylor, pizza will be served.
-"Foe into Friend: Using Technology to Facilitate and Not Destroy the Patient Relationship," 4 p.m., M321-M323, main Baylor, reception to follow.
Presented by the Center for Professionalism in Medicine; noon lecture co-presented by Department of Medicine Grand Rounds.

Oct. 25: Educational session on cochlear implants

The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery is hosting a free educational session on cochlear implant technology for patients with hearing loss Oct. 25 at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus. An open house from 3 to 5:30 p.m. will offer one-on-one communication with cochlear implant manufacturers, followed by the seminar from 5:30 to 7 p.m. led by the Baylor Cochlear Implant Team. Get your rear in gear for colorectal cancer!

Join the Baylor team for Get Your Rear in Gear - Houston on Nov. 4 and help raise awareness about colorectal cancer, the second deadliest cancer killer. Survivors, caregivers, family, friends and the medical community will come together to educate our community about this largely preventable cancer. Events include a timed 5K run, 5K walk and kids fun run. Register for the Baylor Booty Shakers.

Celebrate PAs!

The College recognizes the importance of Physician Assistants during National PA Week, Oct. 6-12. Baylor employs more than 116 PAs and our PA Program has graduated a total of 2,404 professionals. Be sure to express your appreciation to our PAs for their contributions to the health of our community.

HR news: Open enrollment Oct. 9 – 23

The 2018 Open Enrollment period is Oct. 9 – 23. Go to the Baylor intranet to review changes in benefits for 2018 and to find the schedule for benefits meetings and fairs as well as additional information on how to get assistance during Open Enrollment. Benefits-eligible employees can earn 150 BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending an Open Enrollment meeting. You can also join the live-stream Zoom session on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m., but points will not be awarded for this. For more information, email ask-insurance@bcm.edu or call 713-798-1500.

BeWell news: Biometric screenings

BCM BeWell continues to emphasize the importance of being proactive about your health by offering additional onsite biometric screenings, Nov. 7 – 8. View the schedule and instructions on how to register. Benefits-eligible employees who complete their screening and their 2017 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive 2,000 BCM BeWell Vitality Points.
