Appachi of CHOSA honored

Dr. Elumalai AppachiDr. Elumalai Appachi, pediatrician at Children's Hospital of San Antonio, was named a 2016 Health Care Hero by the San Antonio Business Journal in the category of Outstanding Physician – Hospital-based. He was nominated by Pediatrician-in-Chief Dr. Mark Gilger, who praised Appachi's care for critically ill and injured patients and for establishing a culture of leadership at the hospital. An awards ceremony will be held Oct. 12 in San Antonio.

Plon named to genetics board

Dr. Sharon PlonDr. Sharon Plon, professor of pediatrics and of molecular and human genetics and director of the Texas Children’s Cancer Center's Cancer Genetics and Genomics Program, was elected to the American Society of Genetics Board of Directors for 2017. The ASHG is the primary professional membership organization for human genetics specialists worldwide. The board supports the society's mission to advance human genetics in science, health and society through research, education and advocacy.

Flu Update

Flu shots required by employees, trainees

All Baylor employees are required to get a flu vaccine by Nov. 30 and provide verification online. When you complete your online verification, you will be entered into a random drawing for Baylor apparel or gear; three winners will be selected each week through Nov. 30. Benefits-eligible employees also can earn 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points by providing verification of the flu vaccine through the wellness portal. To earn your points, first visit the myOHP website to print your record of receiving a flu shot (receipt will be available 24 to 48 hours after receiving shot). Next, submit your record to the Vitality wellness portal to earn your points. Read Baylor's flu policy.

Future of healthcare at Baylor presentation Sept. 20

The Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine will present "The Future of Healthcare at Baylor" on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the Junior League of Houston. Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean, will discuss the impact of the Affordable Care Act and other legislation on the delivery of healthcare at Baylor and beyond. Dr. Kent Osborne, director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, will offer an update on the Center's efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. The Cancer Center was chosen as this year's Partnership for Baylor fundraising beneficiary. Find event registration information online.

Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 30

The Academy of Distinguished Educators will host its 12th annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Friday, Sept. 30, from noon to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Peer-reviewed posters related to educational initiatives and innovations will be on display; select posters will receive the Educational Scholarship Recognition Award. Join Baylor team at Walk for the Cure

Join the fight against breast cancer by being a part of the Baylor team at the 2016 Susan G. Komen Houston Race for the Cure Oct. 1 or by making a financial contribution. Money raised will fund education, screening and treatment programs and support research efforts, including those at Baylor. Team Baylor Breast Center is open to Baylor employees and students and their friends and family. Join or donate online.

Diversity and Inclusion events

- BCM Pride Social: Come meet and network with the Baylor LGBTQ + Ally community. All trainees, faculty and staff are invited to the BCM Pride Social, 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, hosted by BCM Pride’s faculty mentor, Dr. Daryl Shorter. RSVP online.
- Diversity and Inclusion Week: The second annual Diversity and Inclusion Showcase will be Friday, Oct. 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Baylor organizations that are doing work that directly impacts diversity and inclusion at the College are invited to showcase their work through tables and poster boards. National Postdoc Appreciation Week

National Postdoc Appreciation Week is Sept. 19 – 23. There are about 600 postdoctoral scientists at the Baylor who contribute in significant ways to research and discovery. The Baylor Postdoctoral Association will be hosting events for postdocs throughout the week, including social events and career and scientific seminars. Find more information online, and be sure to express your appreciation to postdocs for their contributions to Baylor.

2017 Open Enrollment: Provide dependent verification documents

Do you want to add new dependents to your benefit plans for 2017? You will need to complete the Dependent Eligibility Verification Form AND submit it along with the supporting documents, such as
- Marriage license (if adding spouse to medical, dental, or vision) or
- Birth certificate/adoption decree (if adding a child to medical, dental, or vision)
The human resources – benefits office will add your dependents to your record in ESS and you will be notified when you can add them to your benefit plans during open enrollment, Oct. 10-24. This must be done before Oct. 24 or you will not be able to add your dependents until 2018. Please submit documentation to ask-insurance@bcm.edu or fax 713-798-5141.
