Kauth honored for career contributions to psychology
Dr. Michael Kauth, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the LGBT Health Program at the DeBakey VA, will receive the James Besyner Award for Lifetime Achievement from the public service division of the American Psychological Association. Recipients of the award have given voice to the role of psychology in healthcare and are leaders in the field. He will receive the award at the APA annual convention Aug. 9-12 in San Francisco.
McDeavitt and Chiou Tan to be honored for PM&R leadership
The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will honor two Baylor faculty members in recognition of their contributions to the PM&R field. Dr. James McDeavitt, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation and senior vice president and dean of clinical affairs, will be honored with the Distinguished Member Award and Dr. Faye Chiou Tan, also a professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, will receive the Distinguished Clinical Award. They will receive the awards at the AAPM&R 2018 Annual Assembly in October.
Srivaths named to blood disorders foundation
Dr. Lakshmi Srivaths has been appointed as chair of the education/advocacy subcommittee for the national Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders. The chair will be in charge of the subcommittee’s organization and ongoing activities, which include creating education for clinic staff, referring providers, providers outside of primary institution and organized/informal education opportunities.

Aug. 10 – 11: Med school White Coat Ceremony and Family Day
First-year medical students will receive their white coats signifying their entry into the medical profession at a ceremony Friday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Bayou City Event Center, 9401 Knight Road. Parents and others get a peek at what their students will be learning when the School of Medicine hosts Family Day from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 11 in the Cullen Building.
Save the Date: TMC Library fundraiser featuring Ken Mattox
The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library Annual Book and Author Fundraiser is Friday, Sept. 7, from 7-9:30 p.m. at the UTHealth Cooley University Life Center, 7440 Cambridge. Guest speaker Dr. Ken Mattox, Distinguished Service Professor and chief of staff at Ben Taub Hospital, will discuss his book, "The History of Surgery in Houston." Tickets are $150, including dinner, wine and a copy of the book. Purchase tickets online. Proceeds benefit the Friends Fund for Staff Development and the TMC Library McGovern Historical Collection.

Houston BCycle now available in TMC!
The Houston BCycle bike-rental program is expanding in the Texas Medical Center with four news stations, including at Ben Taub Hospital and the TMC Commons and more on the way! Other rental stations are located near Rice University, the Museum District, Midtown and Downtown. Fall membership through Dec. 31 is available for $25 for Baylor College of Medicine trainees and employees. Membership offers unlimited rides under 60 minutes, with additional fees for check-outs longer than one hour. BCycle is perfect for short trips between buildings in the medical center and around town for errands and events or to explore a local park or neighborhood. Nominations open for Forbes 30 under 30
Forbes is seeking nominations for its 2019 30 Under 30 list in the science and healthcare categories. These innovative leaders can be M.D. and Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral clinical and research fellows, residents or junior faculty. Nominate online, and check out this year's winners in science and in healthcare for examples of young leaders. Nominations are due by Sept. 7.
Nominations open for medical school leadership positions
Faculty members with an interest in medical education and experience in either patient safety or quality improvement are encouraged to apply for the position of patient safety associate course director position. Faculty interested in public health and underserved populations and an interest in medical education may apply for the determinants, disparities and social health of populations associate course director position. BeWell news: 'Water' You Drinking? Challenge
