Jorgez receives Caroline Wiess Law Fund for Research honor

Dr. Carolina JorgezDr. Carolina Jorgez, assistant professor of urology, received the Junior Faculty Seed Award from the Caroline Wiess Law Fund for Research in Molecular Medicine. Jorgez's laboratory focuses on understanding how the genitourinary tract normally develops and functions and how defects in these processes result in male infertility and common congenital defects that affect testicular descent. Her long-term goal is to identify infertility-causing genes that can be clinically tested to improve genetic testing and treatment options for patients.

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziDr. Morven EdwardsDr. Carla DavisDr. Will ParsonsThe 2016-2017 Department of Pediatrics Research Mentorship Award recipients are Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor in the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor; Dr. Morven S. Edwards, professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, Dr. Carla Davis, associate professor of pediatrics – allergy and immunology, and Dr. Will Parsons, associate professor in the Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers. Award recipients were nominated by pediatric research and clinical postdoctoral fellows and by their peers and colleagues. Their names will be displayed on the second floor of the crosswalk between the Feigin Center and the Children's Nutritional Research Center, and in recognition of their dedication and excellence in research they will receive sponsored travel to a scientific meeting.

Events

Physician Assistant White Coat Ceremony tonight

Members of the Baylor College of Medicine Physician Assistant class of 2017 will receive their white coats in a ceremony this Friday, July 22, at 7 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The class, consisting of 40 students, has completed their didactic training and the ceremony marks their transition to the clinical phase of training. Congrats to the PA class of 2017!

Doc Talk July 27

Dr. Peggy SmithDrop in for DocTalk on Wednesday, July 27, at noon at the McNair campus, conference rooms A and B, to hear Dr. Peggy Smith, director of the Baylor Teen Health Clinic, discuss contemporary challenges during adolescence. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks with Baylor faculty on a variety of health topics followed by a question-and-answer session. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Microbiology student group meeting July 27

The student and postdoc chapter of the American Society for Microbiology in the TMC is hosting a meeting Wednesday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at UT Health's McGovern Medical School, room B.612. The meeting is open to those interested in or already training in the field of microbiology, and topics will include getting involved in TMC podcasts, community outreach and more. Free ice cream!

VA Quality Scholars Summer Institute plenary sessions at Baylor

The VA Quality Scholars Summer Institute is being held in the TMC Aug. 2-5. This interprofessional postdoctoral research fellowship trains healthcare professionals in the principles and methods of quality improvement and patient safety. Two plenary sessions will be held at Baylor and faculty, staff and trainees are invited to attend; no registration required. Rebecca Kaul, chief innovation officer at MD Anderson whose career has focused on technology innovation and commercialization, will speak Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, and Dr. Patricia Gabow, a national leader in hospital reform, will speak Aug. 4 at 4 p.m., also in Cullen Auditorium. Self-nominations sought for Inclusion and Excellence Council

The Office of the President is accepting self-nominations to serve on the newly re-established Inclusion and Excellence Council. This important advisory committee is a forum for assessing and improving the services the College provides and the processes we have in place to ensure excellence and diversity. Interested faculty, staff, postdoctoral trainees, residents and students are encouraged to submit a C.V. and a completed application form to president@bcm.edu by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15. Read the council's charter and charge.

Iacobas leads conference on lymphatic anomalies

Dr. Ionela IacobasDr. Ionela Iacobas, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center, served as co-chair of the second International Conference on Generalized Lymphatic Anomaly and Gorham-Stout Disease, held last month in Atlanta. The conference brought together more than 60 physicians and scientists from around the world to present new advances in the field and establish a consensus for evaluation and monitoring guidelines of these complex lymphatic abnormalities. In addition to Iacobas, who co-chaired along with Dr. Michael Dellinger of the Lymphatic Malformation Institute, five other specialists from Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital participated, including Dr. Judith Margolin, associate professor of pediatrics – hematology-oncology, Dr. Thuy Phung, associate professor of pathology, Dr. Sheena Pimpalwar, assistant professor of radiology, Dr. Prakash Masand, assistant professor of radiology, and Dr. Raj Krishnamurthy, professor of radiology.

BCM BeWell 2016 results session presentation and Quiz

If you were not able to attend the 2016 BCM BeWell results session presentation on June 21 or 22, you still have a chance to watch the video on the BCM BeWell educational seminars page. In the presentation, Wellness Coordinator Jesse Gavin reviews the importance of getting your yearly biometric screening, what steps to take once you get the results and quick health tips to incorporate in your daily routine. Receive 100 BCM BeWell Vitality Points for completing the quiz and answering at least 80 percent of the questions correctly.
