Rosen honored for breast cancer research

Dr. Jeffrey Rosen, professor of molecular and cellular biology, was selected as the 2017 American Association for Cancer Research Distinguished Lecturer in Breast Cancer Research. This award recognizes outstanding science that has inspired or has the potential to inspire new perspectives on the etiology, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of breast cancer. He will receive the award and deliver a lecture at the 40th Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December.

Shah appointed to mental health board

Dr. Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and vice chair for community psychiatry, was appointed to the board of directors of the Mental Health America of Greater Houston. Established in 1954 by philanthropist Ima Hogg, it is the area's longest serving mental health education and advocacy organization focused on shaping the mental health of people and communities in the areas of children and education, integrated health care, chronic illnesses, women, suicide prevention, veterans and aging.

Swann receives suicide prevention grant

Dr. Alan Swann, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor and a staff psychiatrist at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has been awarded a grant for nearly $1 million by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for his study on the behavioral mechanisms, prediction and treatment of short-term suicide risk. Grants awarded by the foundation are meant to support studies that increase the understanding of suicide and test treatments or other interventions to help prevent suicides.

Faculty earn NIH grants

-Dr. Yohannes Ghebre, assistant professor of radiation biology in the Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded a five-year, $1.98 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research on the efficacy of combining one of the current drugs for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis with a small molecule that he discovered to possess antifibrotic action. The study also will investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the process.
-Dr. Nagireddy Putluri, associate professor of molecular and cellular biology and director of the Metabolomics Core, was awarded a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for his project on racial disparity in bladder cancer and identification of altered metabolism in African Americans with the disease compared to Europeans.

Support BCM Pride at June 24 Pride Festival

Come visit the BCM Pride student group at the Houston Pride Festival, June 24 from noon to 7 p.m. at Hermann Square in front of City Hall, followed by the Pride parade. BCM Pride's table will be located at the corner of Walker Street and Bagby Street. The Baylor community also can support BCM Pride’s efforts to provide street relief backpacks for homeless LGBTQ+ youth in Houston. Support the initiative online.

Faculty members are invited to join the executive leadership team and colleagues for a College update and Q&A session at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor.

July 3 cafeteria information

Mary O's Café at the Jamail Specialty Care Center will be closed July 3. The cafeteria at main Baylor will close early, at 1 p.m., on July 3, and will have a limited menu. The College is closed July 4 in observance of Independence Day.
