Bottazzi completes leadership program

Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, graduated from the American Leadership Forum’s Class XXXIX. Program fellows, selected from various sections in the community, participate in a yearlong, national caliber leadership development program, which includes monthly seminars on topical issues to stimulate inquiry, analysis and solutions for the public good. Upon graduating, senior fellows work to bring community stakeholders together to address urgent public concerns.

Medical student Goyal presents research

Medical student Shreya Goyal gave an oral presentation in the Clinical and Therapeutic Poster Breakout Session of the 2017 Pediatric Rheumatology Symposium in Houston. The session features science that is highly relevant and has the potential to change clinical practice. Goyal, who also was awarded a Gina M. Finzi Memorial Student Summer Fellowship from the Lupus Foundation of America in 2016, conducted the research with her mentor, Dr. Scott Wenderfer, assistant professor of pediatrics - renal. Co-authors included Dr. Michael Braun and Drs. Daniel Ashton and Kamlesh Kukreja. The title of the study was "Safety of kidney biopsy in pediatric lupus nephritis."

Nuila selected for writing fellowship

Dr. Ricardo Nuila, assistant professor of medicine and in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, was selected as the Ralph A. Johnston Fellow in the Dobie Paisano Fellowship Program, which is sponsored by the Texas Institute of Letters and The University of Texas at Austin. This highly competitive, nationally recognized fellowship gives creative fiction and non-fiction writers the opportunity to live on a ranch outside Austin and write for an extended period. Nuila was accepted based on his articles about health disparities in Texas.

CHOSA pediatricians honored as health heroes

Dr. Muhummad Mumtaz and Dr. Cody Henderson of the Children's Hospital of San Antonio were selected for 2017 Health Care Heroes Awards by the San Antonio Business Journal in the Outstanding Physician – Hospital Based category. They and other recipients were honored at an awards ceremony May 25. CHOSA is an academic affiliate of Baylor College of Medicine.

Ben Taub Hospital Cardiology Section earns quality award

The Ben Taub Hospital Cardiology Section received the ACTION Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award. This is the top achievement award given by the American College of Cardiology for delivering the highest quality care to heart attack patients. Dr. Nasser Lakkis, professor of medicine and T.L.L. Temple/William H. Spencer, M.D., Chair in Clinical Cardiology, leads the team of committed physicians, nurses, technologists and staff who provide exemplary, evidence based, cardiac care to patients.

Commencement May 30

Baylor College of Medicine's commencement ceremony is Tuesday, May 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Jesse H. Jones Hall for Performing Arts, 615 Louisiana St. The graduation will include 167 graduates from the School of Medicine and 77 from Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, along with a commencement address by Dr. Marc Nivet, executive vice president of institutional advancement at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and the presentation of four honorary degrees as well as the Distinguished Service Award to Dr. James L. Phillips, senior associate dean in the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.

Support Homes for Animal Heroes

The Center for Comparative Medicine is participating in a virtual 5K to support Homes for Animal Heroes, a national program dedicated to rehoming retired research dogs and sharing knowledge about the important role animals play in finding cures for diseases. Join the Baylor team, BCM Beastmode, or donate online. Participate virtually until June 30, or join the Baylor team at Hermann Park June 10 starting at 8 a.m. Family and pets welcome!

Reminder: HR moving June 2, office to be closed

The Human Resources office is relocating to the O’Quinn Medical Tower, 6624 Fannin St., Suite 1800. The office will be closed Friday, June 2, to begin the moving process. It will reopen at the new location on Monday, June 5, at 10 a.m. Normal office hours will resume on Tuesday, June 6.
