Garber to serve as endocrinology association president

Dr. Alan GarberDr. Alan Garber, professor of medicine – endocrinology, was installed as president of the American College of Endocrinology at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists’ 24th Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress in Nashville this week. In this role, he will work to broaden the educational offerings of the ACE to its members and support their efforts toward maintaining skills and acquiring the new knowledge and training necessary to practice at the highest levels in all aspects of the field. The ACE is the scientific and educational arm of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.

Von Noorden honored for work in ophthalmology

Dr. Gunter Von NoordenDr. Gunter Von Noorden, distinguished emeritus professor of ophthalmology, was one of two inductees to the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Opening General Session held last month. Von Noorden has been one of the preeminent leaders in ophthalmology and strabismus surgery for the past 40 years. The Ophthalmology Hall of Fame was created by ASCRS in 1999 to honor pioneers with an ongoing celebration of their distinguished careers and contributions.

Willis awarded radiology scholarship

Dr. Marc WillisDr. Marc Willis, associate professor of radiology, recently was awarded the American Roentgen Ray Society/Leonard Berlin Scholarship in Medical Professionalism. The award is given annually to one radiologist to support study and research related to medical ethics, medico-legal principles, patient accountability, sensitivity to patient diversity and other topics encompassing medical professionalism. The scholarship is funded through The Roentgen Fund of the ARRS and made possible in part by support from Dr. Leonard Berlin.

Stolar and Zoghbi named to local who’s who

Dr. Andrea StolarDr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Andrea Stolar, associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Dr. Huda Zoghbi, professor of molecular and human genetics, were featured in Who’s Who in Leading Medicine in Houston in Intown Magazine. Calling all artists!

It’s time to start preparing entries for the annual charity art show hosted by the BCM Graduate Student Council, which will be held Aug. 3-7. The show benefits the Arts in Medicine Program at the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, providing patients and their siblings the opportunity to express themselves through arts and crafts. BCM students and employees are encouraged to submit art, including paintings, sketches, photographs, jewelry and more, with a minimum of 40 percent of proceeds going toward the charity. Registration to submit art is open until July 15. To obtain the registration form, email ruddy@bcm.edu.

Cardiothoracic surgery hosts surgery conference

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery held its 10th Current Trends in Aortic, Cardiac and General Thoracic Surgery conference May 8-9 with 50 presentations by nationally and internationally renowned speakers covering a wide variety of conditions and procedures. The meeting, held at the Royal Sonesta Houston Hotel and co-hosted by Dr. Joseph Coselli and Dr. David Sugarbaker, attracted an audience of more than 250 during its two daylong sessions. DeBakey VA to establish a Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education

The Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center was awarded funding by the VA Office of Academic Affiliations to establish a Houston Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education, one of two new sites competitively selected to join the five existing Centers of Excellence nationwide. Its goal is to educate interprofessional trainees from medicine, mental health, undergraduate nursing, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy and other health professions to deliver high quality, patient-centered, team-based primary care. The center will be led by director Dr. LeChauncy Woodard, assistant professor of medicine – health services research, and co-director Dr. Jane Anderson, assistant professor of neurology at Baylor and nurse practitioner at the DeBakey VA. The proposal to develop the center was a collaboration of the MEDVAMC, Baylor and the Center for Innovations in Quality, Safety and Effectiveness and also involved The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Texas Women’s University, the University of Houston and Texas Southern University.

Volunteers needed for vaccine study

Volunteers are needed for a vaccine study on schistosomiasis, an infection affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. You should be between 18 and 50 years of age, healthy, and willing to come to the BCM Vaccine Research Center for a screening evaluation and additional follow-up study visits if qualified. Volunteers will be compensated for their time, and parking is provided. Biometric screening results

The BCM BeWell program will offer several presentations during the first week of June at various campus locations that will focus on the results of the BCM BeWell biometric screening and what the results mean to you. This interactive group presentation given by Jesse Gavin, BCM wellness coordinator, will review the different tests performed in this year’s screening and simple steps you can take to increase your daily health and vitality. By attending, you will receive 100 points in the wellness portal. Register online.
