Rice U-Baylor Scholar earns research prize

Kelly MacKenzie, a scholar in the Rice University-Baylor College of Medicine Health, Humanism, and Society program, won the Baker Institute for Public Policy Prize at the Rice Undergraduate Research Symposium last month. MacKenzie, a senior at Rice University, was part of Dr. Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby’s research project on decision making for ventricular assist device placement and developed a project titled “Left Ventricular Assist Device Consent Forms: Current Practices, Gaps, and Recommendations.” Blumenthal-Barby is with Baylor’s Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy.

Baylor Faculty Group Practice honored for excellence

Dr. Michael BelfortThe Baylor College of Medicine Faculty Group Practice, the adult clinical division at Baylor, received a Better Business Bureau Award for Excellence at a ceremony held May 11. This is the third year in a row the FGP has been named among the Winners of Distinction.

Register for Health Policy Symposium

Registration is open for the department of medicine – section of emergency medicine Health Policy Symposium, June 11 at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus. The symposium is for clinicians and healthcare professionals interested in exploring the major themes that will emerge in health policy throughout the year. Topics include value in healthcare, health information technology, gun violence, insurance choices, the Affordable Care Act and the viewpoints of the presidential candidates on healthcare. American Society for Microbiology events

The American Society for Microbiology at the Texas Medical Center student and postdoctoral chapter is hosting a meeting on Wednesday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at the UT McGovern Medical School library, room 1.800, to provide information on community outreach opportunities and other upcoming projects and events for students and trainees interested in microbiology. The chapter also will host a career development event June 1 at the McGovern Medical School, room 1.006, with a microbiologist from a Houston energy company on the intersection of microbiology and the oil field. Pizza will be served at 3:45 p.m. and the career seminar will start at 4 p.m. If you cannot attend these events but still want to get involved with the group, email asmattmc@gmail.com.

New Bioinformatics Core Lab open

The Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center’s Bioinformatics Core Laboratory is now open on the 12th floor of the Feigin Center. The lab provides computational expertise and resources to assist with the design, analysis and presentation of results from high-throughput assays. The laboratory offers experts in computational biology, machine learning, software engineering, systems biology, genetics, biophysics, molecular and chemical biology, statistics and computer science. Services include DNA, RNA and protein profiling and analysis, and their comparisons to external and historical data. Find a complete list of services and more information online.

Faculty Senate electoral unit elections open May 23

Faculty Senate Electoral unit elections take place online May 23-30, with full- and part-time faculty from the following departments, centers, schools and affiliates voting for their representatives: biochemistry and molecular biology, medicine; neurosurgery; orthopedic surgery; pathology & immunology; pediatrics; pharmacology; physical medicine and rehabilitation; psychiatry and behavioral sciences; radiation oncology; radiology; Center for Space Medicine; Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center; School of Allied Health Sciences; School of Medicine; Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center; Ben Taub Hospital and DeBakey VA Medical Center. Candidates who are not elected will be eligible to run for a seat in the at-large elections June 1-8. Faculty, look for your email with a link to the ballot.

Autism study enrolling

Baylor/Texas Children’s Hospital is enrolling patients for the Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research for Knowledge, or SPARK, study. SPARK aims to build a research community of tens of thousands of individuals with autism and their families, who will be asked to share medical and genetic information with scientists and agree to be contacted about future research studies. The data shared will power important new autism research to advance the understanding of the disease and provide meaningful information and resources to participants. If you or your child has a professional diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and you live in the United States, you are eligible to join. Find more information or join online.
