Heslop to lead cell and gene therapy society

Dr. Helen HeslopDr. Helen Heslop, professor of medicine and pediatrics and director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, was named president of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy for 2017-2018 at this year's annual ASGCT conference. The Center for Cell and Gene Therapy was represented by 40 current and former members and presented research in 10 oral presentations.

Lopez selected for maternal-child health program

Dr. Kimberly Kay Lopez, assistant professor in pediatrics - public health and director of the Center for the Study of Adversity, Resilience and Education, was accepted into the 2017-2018 City Match City Leaders program. Each year, City Match selects 10 leaders in maternal and child health from across the U.S. to participate in this intensive program focusing on the core competencies of maternal and child health leadership. Lopez will focus on expanding community-based maternal and child health efforts in Houston.

Rivera leads MS specialists in Cuba

Dr. Victor RiveraDr. George HuttonDr. Victor M. Rivera, distinguished emeritus professor of neurology and founding director of the Maxine Mesinger MS Clinic, led a U.S. delegation of multiple sclerosis specialists to the second Clinical Scientific US-Cuba MS Exchange in Havana. Dr. George Hutton, associate professor and director of the Maxine Mesinger MS Center, was one of the featured speakers along with other Baylor MS training program alumni.

Faculty Group Practice award

The Faculty Group Practice at Baylor College of Medicine received the Winner of Distinction Award from the Better Business Bureau Education Foundation at the 2017 BBB Awards for Excellence luncheon held May 10 at the Bayou City Event Center. The award recognizes organizations that maintain a superior commitment to ethics, overall excellence and quality in the workplace.

Correction: Young investigators honored for immunotherapy research

Dr. Malini Mukherjee, instructor in pediatrics, was the junior faculty division winner at the third annual Young Immuno-Oncology Investigators Forum. Dr. Giedre Krenciute, also an instructor in pediatrics, earned second place.

TMC Orchestra performances

The Texas Medical Center Orchestra, which features several members from Baylor College of Medicine, will perform "These Three Bs: Bach, Brahms and Berlioz" Saturday, May 20, at 6 p.m. at the Hobby Center. Tickets ($20; $10 for students) are available online or at the door. The orchestra also will perform a free concert Tuesday, May 23, at 6 p.m. in the Houston Methodist lobby.

DocTalk May 24

DocTalk with Dr. Spencer Greene, assistant professor of emergency medicine and director of medical toxicology, is Wednesday, May 24, at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor on "Real Toxicology: Not ‘As Seen on TV.'" DocTalk is a series of informal talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points for attending.

Upcoming fundraising walks

-Walk to Cure Arthritis: Join or donate to the BCM Walkin' Warriors on a three-mile or one-mile walk along Buffalo Bayou Trail to raise funds for arthritis research. The walk starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 20, at Fish Plaza, across from the Wortham Theater Center downtown.
-Houston Take Steps: Support Baylor Gastroenterology as the team walks for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America at 7 a.m. May 20 at the Houston Zoo. Donation and registration information is online.
-Cancer Socks 5K: Sponsored by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, Saturday, June 3, starting on the McNair Campus. Former NFL Player and cancer survivor William Dominic Austin, who founded the organization Tackles4Cancer, will host event in celebration of the 30th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Join or donate online.

Faculty receive research support

Dr. Michael Belfort, chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and Dr. Penelope Bonnen, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, were two of the recipients of research support funds at the annual Men of Distinction luncheon earlier this month. In the past decade Men of Distinction has raised $3.85 million for projects that are focused on research, treatment, education and patient care for children in the TMC.

Traub speaks on Centering Pregnancy

Mary TraubMary Traub, a certified midwife and director of the midwifery section in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, recently gave a presentation on centering pregnancy group prenatal care at the third National Midwifery Conference in Shenzhen, China. This model of care is provided as an option to patients in the Houston are who are cared for by Baylor certified midwives as an alternative to traditional care. She also met with a work group in china on developing the curriculum for a group prenatal care education program.

HR moving to O'Quinn Medical Tower

The Human Resources office is relocating to the O'Quinn Medical Tower, 6624 Fannin St., Suite 1800. The office will be closed all day on Friday, June 2, to begin the moving process. The office will open at its new location on Monday, June 5, with limited hours of 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Normal office hours, Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will resume on Tuesday, June 6.

Congratulations to Team Baylor for a successful ride in the 2017 BP MS 150. The team has raised 75 percent of its goal of $100,000.
