Buck to receive honorary degree

Dr. David BuckDr. David Buck, professor of family and community medicine, will receive an honorary degree from Colorado College at the school's commencement ceremony May 21. Buck is being recognized for his work with the underserved, including founding Healthcare for the Homeless, a nonprofit organization that serves as a primary healthcare home for Houston's homeless population.

Hollier to lead ACOG

Dr. Lisa HollierDr. Lisa Hollier, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been named president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She was sworn in during the presidential inauguration and convocation at the ACOG Annual Meeting, the largest gathering of obstetrician-gynecologists in the United States and the premier medical conference focused solely on women's health. As president, Hollier will focus on reducing preventable maternal mortality.

Koch recognized as a leader in ophthalmology

Dr. Doug KochDr. Doug Koch, professor of ophthalmology, was included on The Ophthalmologist's Power List of 2018, a list of the most influential professionals in the field. Koch was recognized in the publication as an expert in improving outcomes of cataract and refractive surgery and for specializing in management of complex conditions of the eye.

Med student Lin receives AOA grant

Weijie Violet LinMedical student Weijie Violet Lin was awarded a 2018 Alpha Omega Alpha Kuckein Medical Student Research Fellowship for her project "Longitudinal Analysis of Teleretinal Imaging: Applying Machine Learning to Identify Predictive Factors for Retinopathy and Treatment Response." Her project mentor is Dr. Christina Weng, assistant professor of ophthalmology.

Lukolyo to serve on committee on global child health

Dr. Heather LukolyoDr. Heather Lukolyo, assistant professor of pediatrics, recently was elected to a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on International Child Health. As a member of the committee, she will assist the section in fulfilling its mission of improving the health of children worldwide by empowering members to make meaningful contributions to global child health.

Lupo honored for research on birth defects and cancer risk

Dr. Philip LupoDr. Philip Lupo, associate professor of pediatrics – oncology, is the 2018 recipient of the F. Clarke Fraser New Investigator Award from the Teratology Society. Along with accepting his award, he will deliver a special lecture about his research looking at birth defects and childhood cancer risk at the society's annual meeting in Clearwater, Fla., in June.

Ben Taub trauma center earns care award

Dr. Rob ToddThe Ginni and Richard Mithoff Trauma Center at Ben Taub Hospital received the Trauma System of Care Award for Level I and II Trauma Centers from the South East Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC). Members of the trauma center, led by Dr. S. Robb Todd, professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and chief of general surgery and trauma at Ben Taub, accepted the award at the SETRAC annual banquet last month.

May 12: TMC Orchestra performs romantic masterpieces

The award-winning TMC Orchestra, which includes several members of the Baylor family, will perform a program of three romantic masterpieces Saturday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the Hobby Center's Zilkha Hall. Tickets are available online.

May 16: Health Equity Grand Rounds

Dr. David Buck, professor of family and community medicine, will present the monthly Baylor Health Equity Grand Rounds from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, in conference rooms A and B at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair campus. His talk is titled "Population Health: Managing Complex Patients to Learn and Fix what is Broken." The event is offered in collaboration with the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds and is open to all Baylor faculty, staff, students and trainees. CME credit will be offered.

May 16: Education Grand Rounds on gender and race

The School of Health Professions and the Office of Faculty Development host Education Grand Rounds, May 16, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, with Rice University psychology professor Dr. Mikki Hebl, an expert on interpersonal discrimination, discussing gender and race issues in the workplace.

May 17: Faculty Awards Day

Cheer for your peers at this omnibus awards ceremony encompassing the Clark Faculty Service Award, Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards, Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education, John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher Award, Faculty Awards for Excellence in Patient Care and Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. See the list of winners online. The event is set for 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor, with a reception to follow.

May 19: Walk for arthritis

Join the BCM Walkin' Warriors for the Walk to Cure Arthritis, Saturday, May 19, at 8 a.m. at Jones Plaza in downtown Houston. The team is led by Dr. Melvyn Harrington, associate professor of orthopedic surgery, who also is the chair of the Houston chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Register or donate online.

May 22: Cutting-edge treatment strategies focus of talk

Guest speaker Dr. Raag Airan, assistant professor of radiology at Stanford University, will speak on "Noninvasive neuromodulation using ultrasonic drug uncaging," Tuesday, May 22, at 11 a.m. in room E4-120 at the Jamail Specialty Care Center on the McNair Campus. Airan’s research is focused on developing methods to interrogate and treat the brain, principally through the use of focused ultrasound and ultrasound-mediated focal drug delivery.

May 22: Speakers needed for middle school career day

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan middle school and Baylor College of Medicine's Center for Educational Outreach are looking for participants in the school's 2018 Day for Health-Related Careers. This special event will be held Tuesday, May 22, from noon to 4 p.m., offering an exciting opportunity for the 8th grade students to learn about career options in the health professions. Learn more.

-Geomedicine: The Fundamentals of Health and Place, Friday, June 1, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., room M321 at main Baylor, providing a comprehensive introduction to geomedicine and use of geographic information system, or GIS, applications in the healthcare field. The course is designed for healthcare professionals with primary roles in clinical care and research with little or no previous training in this area. Register online.
-The Tropical Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology CME Conference, set for Sept. 10 – 15 at the College, is designed to train physicians for surgical practice in tropical, remote and resource-limited settings around the globe. Sessions will use tissue and model-based simulations to prepare participants for a wide range of emergent and essential surgical procedures. Participants will receive 43 CME credits and either a Certificate of Completion or a Diploma in Tropical Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology. Register online by June 1 to attend.

New name conveys school's mission and vision

The Baylor College of Medicine School of Allied Health Sciences has been renamed the School of Health Professions. This new more inclusive and comprehensive name reflects the evolution of the role of health professionals in patient care and the expanded scope of programs in the School, which now includes physician assistants, nurse anesthetists, orthotists and prosthetists and genetic counselors. BCM BeWell will mark National Women's Health Week, May 13 – 19, by offering information and resources on healthy living and recommended preventative screenings. To learn more, stop by BeWell's table on Monday, May 14, or Friday, May 18, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the E hallway at main Baylor.
