Lacorazza’s cancer research funded

Dr. Daniel Lacorazza, associate professor pathology, received a $50,000 grant from the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research for his work on acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The foundation provides peer-reviewed grants for cancer research in the United States and Canada. His previous research has focused on the use of the sulforaphane, a compound found in nature to treat ALL, and this project will cast a wider net to discover additional natural products that can be used as chemotherapeutic agents.

Cohen and Garber honored

During the annual meeting of the American Occupational Therapy Association in Nashville, Tenn., April 16 – 19, Helen Cohen, professor of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery, gave the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture, and Susan Garber, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, received the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award and will give the lecture in 2016. They are the 52nd and 53rd awardees, respectively, of the honor that recognizes scholarship and contributions to the field of rehabilitation. The award and lectureship have never before been given to two individuals at the same institution in consecutive years.

Professionalism lectures April 30

The Center for Professionalism in Medicine at Baylor will present two talks by Dr. Francis Neelon of Duke University Medical Center on Thursday, April 30. He will speak on “Keeping the Fire Aflame: Sidestepping Burnout in Medicine” at noon in Kleberg Auditorium, geared toward students, with pizza for the first 125 guests. He will then talk on “Curing and Healing: Cornerstones of Professionalism” at 4 p.m. in Alkek M.321 and M.323 with a light reception to follow. The talks are part of the Profiles in Professionalism Lecture Series. RSVP to Andrea Croft at acroft@bcm.edu or 713-798-4553.

Baylor historic landmark dedication May 1

The Roy and Lillie Cullen Building at Baylor College of Medicine will be dedicated as a Texas Historic Landmark in a ceremony on Friday, May 1, at 1 p.m. The event will include remarks by Dr. Paul Klotman, elected officials and others as well as the unveiling of the marker. All members of the Baylor community are invited to attend. During the event, the Cullen building and the circular drive will be closed and security will be on hand to provide limited access to lots D and E. The Baylor shuttle will continue regular service, but will pick up and drop off passengers between the Alkek Fountain and the flag pole. Deliveries and parking in the front of the building will be closed from about noon to about 2 p.m.

Educational Innovations Day and awards ceremony May 12

The fourth annual Educational Innovations Day, hosted by the BCM Academy of Distinguished Educators, will be held Tuesday, May 12, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Rebecca Blanchard, of Tufts University School of Medicine will speak on “Strategies for Submitting Educational Innovations for Publication.” The event also will include 10 innovation-related presentations from across the College. An awards ceremony at noon will include the presentation of the Fulbright and Jaworski, Robertson, medical student and resident awards with a light reception following in Rayzor Lounge. CME credit will be provided.

McGuire’s TEDMED talk online

Dr. Amy McGuire, Leon Jaworski Professor of Biomedical Ethics and director of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, gave a TEDMED talk last September where she provided a cautionary framework for genomic sequencing that takes into account personal, social and policy consequences. The video is now available and can be viewed online.
