Kane named ACC fellow

Dr. Lauren KaneDr. Lauren Kane, assistant professor of surgery in the division of congenital heart surgery, was inducted into the American College of Cardiology as a Fellow earlier this month. Fellowship is the highest level of distinction for ACC members and recognizes professional achievements. Kane specializes in the treatment of children with congenital heart disease.

Medical students honored for save-a-life campaign

Baylor medical students who served as leaders of the Texas Two Step How To Save A Life Campaign will be honored with the 2016 Texas College of Emergency Physicians Community Service Award in recognition of their months of hard work planning and implementing this project. The hands-only CPR training event was held in February throughout the state, including in Houston, where 580 people received CPR training. Baylor student volunteers on the project included Jake Valentine, Shehni Nadeem, Mackenzie Hicks, Thuyen Nguyen, Harish Eswaran, Katharine Yang, Ndidi Okeke, Tyler Smith, Stephanie Nguyen, Elias Kassir, Annum Jaffer, Jorge Aceves, Nicholas Tolat, Tiffany Ikwuagwu, Sam Buck, Amir Nikahd, Caroline McCool, Mahdi Agha, Franciska Mandy and Chelsea Henshaw. They will be honored at the TCEP Emergency Medicine Connect Meeting April 23 in Galveston.

Global Health Symposium April 26

The Baylor Global Health Symposium is Tuesday, April 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. The event will include presentations by students and faculty on global health efforts as well as a distinguished lecture from Dr. Nicholas Comninellis, president and CEO of the Institute for International Medicine, whose talk is titled “From Inspiration to Mobilization.”

Billing and compliance presentation by Baylor’s Medicare provider

A presentation on billing compliance will be held Thursday, April 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the McNair Conference Room A with Dr. Debra Patterson, medical director of Novitas Solutions, Baylor’s Medicare provider. Topics discussed will include the top three physician issues in billing, prepay audits and copy and paste/EMR issues, followed by a question-and-answer session. Lamb to deliver talk during National Infertility Awareness Week

National Infertility Awareness Week is April 24 – 30. Join Dr. Dolores Lamb, professor of urology and director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine, for “Fertility Preservation in Men & Children: The Promise of Sperm Banking and Spermatogonial Stem Cells,” at The Conversation Matters, hosted by MD Anderson Cancer Center. This event will take place Thursday, April 28, from noon to 1 p.m. at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mendelsohn Faculty Center, Floor 1 (FC1.2002).

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference

Baylor’s Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is Thursday, April 28, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. It will offer discussion and strategies related to patient safety and value in healthcare, and Baylor faculty, fellows, residents and students will present their peer-reviewed work in the area of quality and safety. The conference is free and is open to physicians, residents, health professionals and medical and allied health students from the Houston region. The conference qualifies for 2.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Register online.

Join groups to bike to work May 6!

The Texas Medical Center Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 6. The organization Bike Houston will lead group rides from various neighborhoods into the TMC, with a leader who will demonstrate how to safely commute into work. All rides arrive at 8 a.m., and start times vary by area. A support station with food, drinks and prizes will be set up at 6550 Bertner Ave., outside of Garage 15. Register online.

Emergency notification system; emergency relief funds

The flooding in Houston earlier this week serves as reminder to sign up for Baylor’s emergency notification system so you can receive notice of campus delays and closings and other important information. The Employee Emergency Relief Fund is available to assist Baylor employees who were impacted by the flood. In addition, contributions can be made to the fund through personal check, credit card or payroll deduction. Learn more online.

Backup care program offers no co-pays in May

Benefits-eligible employees can use up to 20 days of care per child or adult/elder family member through the backup care program provided by Bright Horizons. During May, Bright Horizons is offering use of its benefits without any co-pays.
