Hotez, Zoghbi named to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Peter J. Hotez, professor and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, and Dr. Huda Y. Zoghbi, professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Baylor, both also with Texas Children's Hospital, have been elected as the newest members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation's most prestigious honorary titles. Hodges earns grant for leukemia research

Dr. H. Courtney Hodges, CPRIT Scholar and assistant professor of molecular and cellular biology, was selected for the Medical Research Award from the Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. His $225,000 grant award from the foundation will fund studies of chromatin regulatory mechanisms in mixed-lineage leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer that resists conventional treatments.

Samson elected to endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism council

Dr. Susan Samson, associate professor of medicine and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism fellowship program director, was elected to the Council of the Association of Program Directors of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism for a two-year term from April 2018 to March 2020. The association serves and supports training programs in endocrinology and metabolism that prepare fellows, residents and medical students for clinical and research careers in the field.

Today: Multicultural Festival and NIH speaker

As part of the Multicultural Festival sponsored by the Association for Graduate Student Diversity, Dr. Sharon Milgram, director of the Office of Intramural Training and Education, will give a keynote talk, "Becoming a Resilient Scientist," at 11 a.m. in Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus. Cultural food, performances, art and more will be offered in Rayzor Lounge from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

April 26: Team Discovery

The next Team Discovery will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on April 26 in the DeBakey Building, room 323. The focus of this session will be "Finding your Seat on the Bus: Negotiation Skills for Minimizing Conflict and Maximizing Team Effectiveness." April 26: Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference

Baylor's 5th Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is April 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave. The conference will highlight a peer-reviewed selection of quality and safety research projects and program innovations. Jointly offered by Baylor, Texas Children's Hospital and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; CME credits available. Register online.

May 1: Faculty orientation and promotion recognition

Learn about resources available across Baylor's mission areas and hear career tips and strategies from a faculty panel at New Faculty Orientation, 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. May 1 in Kleberg Auditorium, main Baylor. It is followed by a reception in Alkek Lobby to recognize new faculty members and those recently promoted to the ranks of associate professor and professor. Both events are open to all faculty members. RSVP to Deborah Fernandez.

May 1: Asthma Town Hall

Join healthcare professionals, policymakers and patients for the first-ever Houston area town hall on asthma on May 1, World Asthma Day, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive. The event is free, but you must RSVP online. Hosted by Baylor and Harris Health.

Register for Pri-Med primary care conference

Pri-Med Southwest, a leading conference for primary care, is May 16 to18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Baylor is the academic partner of the conference, which offers up to 20.75 CME credits and will feature the most current clinical updates in primary care and subspecialties as well as live orthopedic demonstrations, interactive sessions and keynote addresses. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that acts of sexual violence impact all members of the community. Baylor is committed to the idea that all community members have the right to be free from sex and gender based discrimination, which includes sexual violence. Mikiba Morehead, the Title IX Coordinator in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity, provides support to those who have been harmed by sexual violence. Infertility Awareness Week

National Infertility Awareness Week is April 22 to 28. Dr. Sohye Kim, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the division of reproductive psychiatry, offers advice on how to handle the emotional effects of infertility. Read more.

Submissions are open for grants from the Center for Space Medicine's Translational Research Institute for Space Health. The grant project, Biomedical Research Advances for Space Health, or BRASH, has six areas of interest. Learn more.

Volunteers needed for universal flu vaccine study

Researchers at the BCM Vaccine Research Center are looking for volunteers to participate in a study evaluating a universal influenza vaccine. Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 49 who are in good general health are needed for this study. Benefits for participations include being compensated up to $675 and receiving the 2018-2019 seasonal influenza vaccine.
