Christner to serve on wellness collaborative

Dr. Jennifer ChristnerDr. Jennifer Christner, dean of the School of Medicine, was selected as a co-leader of the Student Wellness Collaborative of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics. Chosen by the council's executive committee, she will serve a two-year term focused on advancing the organization's goals of providing resources and support to medical educators.

Fu awarded for macular degeneration research

Dr. Yingbin FuDr. Yingbin Fu, associate professor and the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Endowed Chair in ophthalmology, has earned the Helen Juanita Reed Award for Macular Degeneration from the BrightFocus Foundation. Fu's lab studies the biological mechanisms underlying various types of neurodegeneration and aging. The award will be presented at the Association for Vision and Ophthalmology annual conference later this month in Honolulu.

Lupski honored by March of Dimes

Dr. James LupskiDr. James Lupski, the Cullen Endowed Chair in Molecular Genetics, received the March of Dimes Colonel Harland Sanders Award for Lifetime Achievement in the field of birth defects on Wednesday at the American College of Medical Genetics meeting in North Carolina. The award is granted annually to an individual whose career of research, education or clinical service has made a significant contribution toward the prevention of birth defects. It was presented by Dr. Brendan Lee, chair of the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.

April 16: Biomedical Research Awareness Day

Baylor will observe Biomedical Research Awareness Day on April 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge and Cullen Auditorium on the main Baylor campus. Stop by to visit displays and hear talks on the important role that laboratory animals play in advancing scientific discovery. Speakers include Dr. Jeffrey Rogers, Dr. Corey Reynolds, Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. William Norton of MD Anderson Cancer Center.

April 17: Conversation on sexual harassment and bystander intervention

The Office of the Provost and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity will host a Compassionate Conversation Tuesday, April 17, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The session is open to all Baylor faculty, students, trainees and staff. Dr. Karen Lawson, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Mikiba Morehead, Title IX coordinator, will facilitate the session.

April 18: Alexander Award and Lecture and opioid symposium

The Joan and Stanford Alexander Annual Award in Psychiatry will be presented to Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, assistant secretary of health and human services for mental health and substance use, who will deliver a lecture, "Informing Federal Healthcare Policy: The Role of Psychiatry," at 10:30 a.m. April 18 in Cullen Auditorium. The award and lecture is part of the Opioid and Substance Abuse Symposium, which will include panel discussions and presentations by legislators and leading experts in the field.

April 19: Earth Day at Baylor

Earth Day at Baylor is April 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Stop by to learn about the College’s recycling and sustainability efforts and to get information from Houston environmental organizations and Market Day vendors. Small hand-held electronic devices also can be dropped off to be recycled. Learn more.

April 19: DocTalk on OCD

Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale, assistant professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, will present a DocTalk on obsessive compulsive disorder on Thursday, April 19, at noon in Cullen Auditorium. DocTalk is a series of informal talks on a variety of health topics by Baylor experts. Eligible employees who attend may receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

April 20: Multicultural Festival

The Multicultural Festival, hosted by the Association for Graduate Student Diversity, will share Baylor's diversity through food, performances, music, art and information, April 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge.

April 21: Ride for Mental Health

Join the Peace of Mind Foundation in the Ride for Mental Health on Saturday, April 21, to raise awareness for mental health and end the stigma surrounding mental illnesses. Learn more and register.

April 26: Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference

Baylor's 5th Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference is April 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Onstead Auditorium, 6767 Bertner Ave. The conference will highlight a peer-reviewed selection of quality and safety research projects and program innovations. Jointly offered by Baylor, Texas Children's Hospital and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; CME credits available. Register online.

Match Day for O&P students

Coselli's Crusaders

It's a match! Students in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program recently celebrated their Match Day where they learned where they will be doing their residency rotations. After completing their classroom training, students complete six, three-month rotations prior to graduating from the program. Congratulations to the 24 students who matched!

Celebrating Women's History Month in BCM Family newsletter

To crown a month of events highlighting women in science and medicine, the Office of the Provost and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity hosted a talk by pioneering academic leader and Prairie View A&M President Ruth Simmons and also celebrated the College's own Women of Excellence. RIITE Rewards program update

Human Resource's RIITE Rewards Program has been discontinued, and any faculty and staff with RIITE Reward point balances must redeem their points by Oct. 31, 2018. Department managers are encouraged to recognize and reward their own employees. Log in to the RIITE Rewards website to redeem points.

2018 Wellness Fair Interest Survey

The Office of Student Services and BCM BeWell will host the annual Wellness Fair on May 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the courtyard and Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. The event will include interactive wellness activities including Tai Chi and yoga, nutrition demonstrations and more. Participants who complete designated activities will receive a BCM BeWell prize; BCM BeWell Vitality points also available. RSVP online by April 20. Email wellness@bcm.edu with questions.
