R.I.T.E. program wins prestigious Harris Health System award

Dr. Marc Willis and team receive R.I.T.E. awardThe Realizing Improvement through Team Empowerment (R.I.T.E.) program recently won the Harris Health System's 2017 Ben Taub and Quentin Mease Hospital Innovation of the Year Award. The R.I.T.E. program is an experiential, team-based, quality improvement education program. The goal of the program is to provide just-in-time education for frontline staff within an organization to enable them to solve complex problems and achieve quality improvement. The program is under the direction of Dr. Marc Willis, associate professor of radiology and associate chair for quality improvement in the department.

Baylor Academy at Ryan receives recognition as a top magnet school

Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan recently was named a 2017 School of Excellence winner by the Magnet Schools of America. Schools of Excellence are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school's magnet theme. The school prepares diverse students for rigorous high school programs, college and careers through an innovative, accelerated health science program.

Human Genome Sequencing Center earns NHLBI grant

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute's Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program named Baylor's Human Genome Sequencing Center as a participant in a groundbreaking half-billion dollar program to bring whole genome sequencing and other "omic" technologies that monitor the expression of the genome in response to the environment to the forefront of clinical research. Events

Today: Mixer for women in medicine

Baylor's chapter of the American Medical Women's Association is hosting a mixer celebrating women in medicine today, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Salento wine bar in Rice Village. Women in any medical profession and at any point in their training/education are welcome to attend this event to discuss ways to promote leadership, mentoring and strategic alliances among female faculty, residents and students at Baylor College of Medicine. Light bites will be provided; happy hour drink prices from 5 to 7 p.m.

Life-saving courses

The Department of Emergency Medicine offers semi-monthly ACLS, BLS and combined ACLS-BLS re-certification courses. The AHA-certified courses are $135 for ACLS or $175 for ACLS and BLS combined. Upcoming classes are March 11 and March 25 at 9 a.m. on the main Baylor campus. Skills verification also is offered during these courses. DocTalk on colorectal cancer March 14

Dr. Ben MusherThe next DocTalk is March 14 at noon in Kleberg Auditorium with Dr. Benjamin Musher, associate professor of medicine – hematology/oncology, speaking on colorectal cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. DocTalk is a series of informal lunch time talks with Baylor faculty on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

BeWell physical activity presentation March 14 and 16

Join BCM BeWell coordinator Jesse Gavin on March 14 and March 16 at noon in Cullen Auditorium for "Physical Activity and Me" to get tips on how to build a fitness program to fit your individual needs. He will discuss the various types of physical activity, exercise equipment, fitness centers and more. Benefits-eligible employees may attend one of the two presentations to earn 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Match Day March 17

Match Day is Friday, March 17, in the Baylor courtyard on the main campus. The program will start at 10:40 a.m., and fourth-year medical students will open their envelopes notifying them of their residency match promptly at 11 a.m. More than 160 fourth-year medical students at Baylor are participating in Match Day, which is the culmination of the national program that pairs fourth-year medical students with residency programs throughout the nation. Faculty, staff and trainees are encouraged to drop in on the exciting courtyard festivities! If you can't make it in person, catch Match Day on a live stream.

Diabetic foot conference March 23-25

Registration is open for the 17th annual DFCon interdisciplinary diabetic foot conference, March 23-25 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Houston near the Galleria. The conference is co-chaired by Dr. Joseph Mills with Drs. Miguel Montero-Baker and Bijan Najafi serving as course directors. It is designed for the wide spectrum of generalists and specialists who diagnose and manage the diabetic foot and includes didactic talks, panel discussions, Q&A sessions, symposia and workshops focusing on diagnostic and interventional strategies for diabetic foot ulcers and amputation prevention. Houston Global Health Collaboration

The Houston Global Health Collaborative SUSTAIN Conference 2017 is March 23-25 at the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business. The conference connects individuals and institutions in the Texas Medical Center to address global health challenges through education, research and service. More than 60 speakers, including many from Baylor, will cover a variety of topics centered on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Complimentary food, coffee and wine/beer is available during the event. Register online.

Bill pay now offered through MyChart

The Baylor College of Medicine MyChart system now includes a billing function, allowing patients to pay their bills online, contact customer service and update demographic information. For more information, log in to MyChart or call Patient Business Services at 713-798-1900.

Call for Applications: The Chao Physician-Scientist Award

Applications are being accepted for the 2017 Chao Physician-Scientist Award, which provides one-year awards of up to $100,000 for young investigators at Baylor who are beginning their independent research careers. Clinical and translational research projects will be considered. Applicants should have completed their fellowship and be in the process of seeking or awaiting funding of a K08 or a K23 grant. The award is made possible through a gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation. Applications are due March 31. Apply online.

Apply for Master Teacher Fellowship Program

Applications for the Master Teacher Fellowship Program Application will be accepted through April 1. The program's goal is to enhance the educational mission of the College by improving faculty knowledge of key educational principles and theories and increasing skills in lecturing, designing materials and evaluating learning, and to build interest among faculty in serving as an educational leader. Fellows attend a retreat and monthly sessions and also work on an independent project. Find more information Apply online.

Applications are being accepted for the sixth annual Baylor Wellness 5k Committee! Planning the 5k is a great opportunity to get to know and work closely with fellow students from different programs while developing leadership/planning skills.
