Awards and Recognitions

Garber recognized as a leader in occupational therapy

Susan L. Garber, MA, OTR, FAOTA, FACRM, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, was included in the list of 100 Influential People by the American Occupational Therapy Association. The list was compiled to commemorate the centennial of the field of occupational therapy. Learn more about Garber and her peers who influenced occupational therapy's 100-year history.

Paldino's research awarded

Dr. Michael Paldino's paper, "Brain Network Architecture and Global Intelligence in Children with Focal Epilepsy," was selected as the 2016 Lucien Levy Best Research Article Award Winner in the American Journal of Neuroradiology. Paldino, assistant professor of radiology, authored the paper with Drs. Farahnaz Golriz, Mary Lynn Chapieski, Wei Zhang and Zili David Chu, all of Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital. The award recognizes the best original research paper accepted by the journal in 2016.

Phung earns research grant

Dr. Thuy Phung, assistant professor of pathology & immunology, was awarded a $101,000 grant from the Lymphatic Malformation Institute for her research on the molecular cause of lymphatic anomalies, a collaboration with the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. The LMI funds studies of generalized lymphatic anomaly and Gorham-Stout disease, with focus on identifying the cause and effective therapies for treating these rare disorders of the lymphatic system.

Faculty elected to American Pediatric Society

Baylor faculty members elected to the American Pediatric Society for 2017 are Dr. Carolyn Altman, Dr. Tom Baranowski, Dr. Jeffrey Kaiser, Dr. Douglas Moodie and Dr. Benjamin Shneider, all professors of pediatrics; Dr. Jeffrey Kim, associate professor of pediatrics; and Dr. Antonio Cabrera, assistant professor of pediatrics. Baylor/Texas Children's had more new members than any other institution nationally. The APS is dedicated to the advancement of child health through promotion of pediatric research, recognition of achievement and excellence in pediatrics through advocacy, scholarship, education and leadership development.

CVRI Symposium abstracts due March 6

Abstracts are due March 6 by 6 p.m. for the fifth annual Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium. Abstract submission is open to students, faculty, fellows and residents interested in presenting their poster on a topic pertaining to cardiovascular research. The symposium will be held April 4 on the main Baylor campus with keynote talks by Dr. Christine Seidman of Harvard Medical School and Baylor's Dr. Richard Gibbs. Submit abstracts online.

Student research symposium March 9

The 17th annual Henry J.N. Taub and James K. Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium is Thursday, March 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge and Cullen Auditorium. Stop by to view students' research posters and for the keynote address at 12:15 p.m. by Dr. Huda Zoghbi on "From Genes to Neural Networks and Disorders of the Nervous System."

Student appreciation at TMC Library March 9

The TMC Library will host Student Appreciation Day March 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Baylor students are invited to take a break and enjoy live Jazz, free lunch and snacks, drawings for gift cards, giveaways a visit from Faithful Paws, the popular therapy dogs, for hugging and petting.

Duncan Cancer Center symposium March 10

The Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center's 14th annual symposium is Friday, March 10, in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. The theme for this year's symposium is "Power in Synergy" with a focus on the collaboration between the cancer center and other Baylor research centers and departments. Keynote speakers are Dr. Stephen Chanock, director of the National Cancer Institute's Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, and Dr. Dax Kurbegov, vice president of the CHI Institute for Research and Innovation.

Community Health Day March 25

First-year medical students are hosting the 11th annual Community Health Day March 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ethel Mosley Young Elementary School, 3555 Bellfort Ave. The event will include health screenings and information for families in the area. Entrepreneurship Class at Rice

Dr. Jack Gill's Life Science Entrepreneurship class, "Role of Physicians, Scientists, and Engineers in High-tech Startups," will be held March 20 to April 25, mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m. at the BioScience Research Collaborative. Topics include the roles of physicians, scientists, engineers and MBAs in biotech, medical device and other life science companies and trends and innovations driving the creation of new products in established and startup companies. Rodeo ticket sales extended to 4 p.m.

General admission/barbecue contest tickets and half-price carnival packs to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo can be purchased inside the Office of Communications, located in main Baylor, room 176B, through 4 p.m. today. Rodeo shows/concert tickets are not available. Cash or check payable to Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Blood drive success

The CHI Baylor St. Luke's blood drive held Feb. 14 was a success with 32 whole blood donors. When those blood units are separated into three different components (red cells, platelets and plasma), it means that 96 patient lives were extended or saved by these generous donors! Mark your calendars for the next blood drive on Tuesday, April 11, at main Baylor. More details to follow.

Volunteers needed for study on depression and gut function

Participants are still needed for a study to understand how depression and gut function may be related in youth. The study visit will involve completing questionnaires, providing a stool sample, taking a sugar solution and collecting urine for 24 hours, a blood draw and bone scan. Volunteers will be compensated for their time and mileage will be reimbursed. Those interested should complete the online screening form.
