Nuila honored for literary work

Dr. Ricardo NuilaDr. Ricardo Nuila, assistant professor of medicine, is the recipient of the first annual New England Review Award for Emerging Writers. The award is presented to a writer who offers an unusual and compelling new voice and has been published by NER. He will attend the 2015 Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, a nationally renowned literary event, as the first New England Review Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference Scholar. His story “At the Bedside” appears in the NER, issue 35.1, and his essay on the care of undocumented immigrants was featured in the Winter 2015 issue of VQR, a national literary journal, and on Longform.com, and other essays and fiction have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, McSweeney’s and American Short Stories 2011.

Singh appointed to patient safety panel

Dr. Hardeep SinghDr. Hardeep Singh, associate professor of medicine at Baylor and chief of the Health Policy, Quality and Informatics Program at the Houston VA Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, was appointed co-chair of the National Quality Forum’s Health Information Technology (HIT) Patient Safety Expert Panel for the Prioritization and Identification of Health IT and Patient Safety Measures project. The goal of this project is to address the major methodological and data issues related to the use of patient-reported outcomes in performance measurement and identify the critical path to achieving NQF endorsement. Ziats wins essay contest

Medical student Mark Ziats won first prize in the 2014 Stanley M. Kaplan Essay Contest for his paper, “Identification of Differentially Expressed MicroRNAs Across the Developing Human Brain.” Articles, review papers and essays were received from across the country for the contest, which is sponsored by the University of Cincinnati Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience to encourage improved writing and research skills among medical students. Ziats will receive a $500 prize.

Student research symposium March 5

The 15th annual James K. Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium will be held Thursday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. Student posters will be on display in Rayzor throughout the day, and the keynote address by Dr. Todd Rosengart, professor and chair of surgery, will be at 12:15 in Cullen. He will speak on “Cardiac Regeneration: Thinking the Unthinkable.”

Wear blue day March 6

Join the department of gastroenterology and hepatology for National Dress in Blue Day on Friday March 6. By “going blue,” the department hopes to raise public awareness and educate people on the facts about colon cancer and how they can reduce their risk of the disease. Find more information online.

Mary O’s to open March 2 at Jamail

New food service at the Jamail Specialty Care Center provided by Mary O’s will start Monday, March 2. Limited options such as grab-and-go sandwiches and salads will be available initially, with full service starting March 16. In addition, Mary O’s catering services will be available throughout the Baylor campus. More information about food service on the main Baylor campus will be coming soon.

Medical premium discount

Baylor faculty member authors book on ACA

Dr. Hamisu Salihu, professor and vice chair of research in the department of family and community medicine, has published a book, “ObamaCare Simplified.” It offers an easy-to-use guide on the Affordable Care Act, covering topics such as the health exchange, subsidies available based on income, penalty tax and information on qualifying for Medicaid. “ObamaCare Simplified” is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble online and WestBow Press.
