Bottazzi named AAAS public engagement fellow

Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, was selected as a 2017-18 Public Engagement Fellow of the AAAS Alan I. Leshner Leadership Institute for Public Engagement with Science. She is one of 15 infectious disease researchers selected for demonstrating leadership and excellence in their research careers and interest in promoting meaningful dialogue between science and society. Fellows will spend a week in Washington, D.C., in June for intensive public engagement and science communication training and networking. After the training, they will return to their institutions with the goal of increasing engagement opportunities.

Hair honored by nutrition organization

Dr. Amy Hair, assistant professor of pediatrics and director of the neonatal nutrition program at Texas Children's Hospital, was selected by the American Society for Nutrition to receive the 2017 Samuel J. Fomon Young Physician Award. This award is given to a physician within 10 years of completion of medical postdoctoral training for outstanding work in the general area of pediatric nutrition, infant growth or body composition. Hair is nationally known for her leadership in advocating for human milk feeding for very low birth weight infants. She will be presented with the award at the ASN's awards ceremony April 23 in Chicago.

Jankovic leads neurotoxin conference

Dr. Joseph Jankovic, professor of neurology, presided over the TOXINS2017 Congress in Madrid, Spain, which included participants from more than 55 countries. The Congress, sponsored by the International Neurotoxin Association, is an umbrella organization for all therapeutic and cosmetic uses of botulinum toxin. The conference included presentations on the latest developments in the science and therapeutic practice of neurotoxins, basic science and clinical didactic tracks, poster sessions and a number of practical workshops.

Physician networking event Feb. 23

The Find a Physician Networking Event, formerly Breakfast with the Docs, is Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference room A. Baylor physicians are encouraged to attend to meet colleagues, build relationships and get referrals. Refreshments and light appetizers will be served.

Film festival focuses on disability issues

The ReelAbilities Film Festival will be held Feb. 19-23, sponsored in part by Baylor affiliate TIRR Memorial Hermann. The festival will screen 15 films at Edwards Greenway Grand Palace Stadium 24, each featuring an interactive event to foster dialogue between the audience, the filmmaker, parents, professionals and persons with disabilities and to explore the particular subjects depicted in the film.

Rare Disease Day Houston Feb. 25

The second annual Rare Disease Day is Saturday, Feb. 25, at the United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive. Sponsored by Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, along with the National Organization for Rare Disorders, the event will include an introduction by Dr. Brendan Lee, chair and professor of molecular and human genetics, and an information session in English and Spanish on patient transition from pediatric to adult care. Local and national rare disease organizations will host booths and present short seminars. Find more event information and register online or call 832-822-4182. Join the E3: diaBEATes program starting March 1

A new program called E3: diaBEATes will launch March 1 at noon at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference room B. The program is open to all benefits-eligible employees who are currently diagnosed with diabetes, at risk for diabetes or seeking to learn more about healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes. Join Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, professor of family and community medicine, and registered dietitian Roberta Anding as they lead weekly seminars to engage, educate and empower you! GI and Liver Course March 4-5

Baylor's 17th annual GI and Liver Course is March 4-5 at the MD Anderson Mitchell Basic Science Research Building in Onstead Auditorium. Dr. Kalpesh Patel, assistant professor of medicine in the section of gastroenterology, serves as activity director of this conference, which will review current and emerging medical therapies in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and outline the most effective ways to integrate this information into clinical practice. Managing to the Mission training

Register online for Managing to the Mission, a two-day training class for those who are in a management role or on a career track to become a manager. Topics will include leadership assessment, teambuilding, communication skills, effective meeting presentations, delegation, best practices at BCM and an overview of key policies. Nominations open for Love Award

Nominations are being accepted for the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. Candidates will be considered for their qualities of professionalism in patient care, clinical research and/or education as well as humanism. The nominee must be a full-time or part-time faculty or voluntary faculty physician with a BCM appointment, be in good standing and have contributed to the institution for five or more years. Nominations may be made by department chairs and center directors. The nomination deadline has been extended to Wednesday, Feb. 22, at midnight.
