Bottazzi selected for leadership program

Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, professor of pediatrics and associate dean of the National School of Topical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, was selected as a member of the Class XXXIX of the American Leadership Forum Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter. The program provides the opportunity to broaden and strengthen leadership skills by bringing together diverse representatives from Houston, including from business, education, government and medical sectors, to discuss important community issues. Graduates of the program become Senior Fellows and enjoy a wide range of options for continuing education and community involvement.

Health program developed by Link awarded

Healthy and Whole, a program created by Dr. Andrea Link, program manager with Healthcare for the Homeless Houston and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, received the John P. McGovern Champion of Health Secondary Award from the Texas Medical Association Foundation. Healthy and Whole addresses the mental health and medical needs of women who have been sexually exploited. The award was presented at the TMA winter conference last month.

BCM BeWell Weight Watchers information sessions

Benefits-eligible employees are invited to attend an information session on Weight Watchers’ new program, Beyond the Scale. Sessions will be held:
- Monday, Feb. 22, noon to 1 p.m., Main Baylor, room N311
- Tuesday, Feb. 23, noon to 1 p.m., Baylor Clinic, 11th floor conference room

Ultrasound course for healthcare professionals

Registration is open for An Ultrasound Odyssey: Integrating Bedside Ultrasound into Patient Care, to be held March 25-26. The course is an innovative way to learn bedside ultrasound, including hands-on experience with live models. This point-of-care ultrasound course is geared toward physicians and healthcare professionals in critical care, surgery, internal medicine, emergency medicine, family practice, ob/gyn, pediatrics and anesthesia. Valentine’s Day is time to celebrate healthy, loving relationships. Unfortunately, not all relationships should be celebrated. If you or someone you know is in an unhealthy or abusive relationship, help is available. Visit Baylor’s Title IX website for information and resources.

Nominations sought for DeBakey research awards

Baylor faculty members are invited to submit nominations for the 2016 Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Excellence in Research Awards, given annually to faculty who have made the most significant published scientific contributions to clinical or basic biomedical research during the past three years. Awardees receive a commemorative medallion and $5,000 fund to support their research. Submit nominations online.

Heart health fair

Dr. Nasser Lakkis, professor of medicine – cardiology, served as director of the Heart Attack Prevention Kickoff health fair held on Saturday, Feb. 6. The event included blood pressure and cholesterol checks, healthy cooking demonstrations and exercise activities geared toward a heart healthy lifestyle. Blood pressure machines and weight scales were distributed free to attendees. Held at the start of Heart Month, it was supported by Baylor, Harris Health, the city of Houston mayor’s office, Houston Fire Department/Emergency Medical Services and the Houston Department of Health.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to participate in a study to investigate the effects of sertraline in people with low-risk myelodysplastic syndrome. It is hoped that sertraline will decrease disease progression and reduce the need for blood transfusions. Find more information.
