Donoviel honored with 2017 NSBRI Pioneer Award

Dr. Jim PhillipsDr. Dorit Donoviel, assistant professor in Baylor's Center for Space Medicine, was awarded the National Space Biomedical Research Institute Pioneer Award. This award recognizes individuals whose efforts and accomplishments have provided new paths for the NSBRI and its partner, NASA. Donoviel, director of the Biomedical Innovation Laboratory at the NSBRI and Center for Space Medicine, has accelerated programs to enhance healthcare in space and on Earth, such as the NSBRI Industry Forum and the SMARTCAP program.

El-Serag named to gastroenterological association leadership

Dr. Andrew RiceDr. Hashem El-Serag, chair and professor of medicine, was selected by the American Gastroenterological Association Nominating Committee to serve as the next vice president of the association. His term will start in July 2017 as vice president followed by one year as president elect. In July 2019, he will assume the role of 114th president of the AGA, the largest and most influential professional society in digestive diseases worldwide.

Faculty earn ASH Scholar Awards

Several Baylor faculty members were recipients of the American Society of Hematology's 2017 Scholar Awards. One of ASH's most prestigious award programs, the scholar awards support fellows and junior faculty dedicated to careers in hematology research as they transition from training programs to careers as independent investigators. Baylor recipients include Dr. Erin Peckham-Gregory, a postdoctoral fellow in pediatric oncology, clinical research fellow award; Dr. Emily Mace, assistant professor of pediatrics, basic junior faculty award; Dr. Premal Lulla, assistant professor of medicine, clinical junior faculty award.

Staff members named to AAMC group

Mae Reyes, executive assistant in the Office of the Provost, Michelle Reed, administrative assistant in the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and Jamie Smith, executive coordinator in the medical school, all were named to the Association of American Medical College’s Deans' Assistant Group. The Deans' Assistants Group represents the administrative/executive assistants to deans in colleges of medicine, and its mission is to improve communication among all medical schools.

Blood drive Feb. 14

A blood drive benefitting the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center's blood center will be held Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Donors will get a cholesterol test and learn results and will receive a T-shirt. Register in advance online or drop by to donate.

Meeting on immigration policy concerns Feb. 15

Everyone in the Baylor community with concerns about the current immigration policy is encouraged to attend a Compassionate Conversations event Feb. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Leadership and staff from the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of General Counsel, the International Services Office, the Ombuds Office and others will be available to answer questions and provide support that will focus on the immigration policy concerns and discuss resources available.

Abstracts open for annual quality and safety conference

Abstracts are being accepted for the 4th Annual Baylor College of Medicine Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference, Wednesday, April 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. in Onstead Auditorium. Abstracts should focus on quality and safety, including quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, educational innovations, and similar topics, and can be submitted by students, faculty and healthcare providers. Abstracts will be selected through a peer review process to be presented at the conference. Deadline for submissions is March 3. Learn more online.

One-day microbiome innovation forum

Bugs, Drugs and Beyond: Targeting the Microbiome to Transform Healthcare, a forum to explore the ways in which innovators from Houston and beyond are harnessing the human microbiome and advancing novel therapeutics, diagnostics and other health products, will be held March 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at TMCx on the McGovern campus. In addition to a program of interactive session and talks by leaders in the field, the event includes a QuickFire Challenge where innovators can pitch promising ideas or research with the potential to impact patients. Applications to apply for this challenge are due by Feb. 12. Learn more, apply and register online.

New policy update

The Employee Wages, Overtime, and Extra Work Policy (02.4.05) was adopted Jan. 25, replacing the following policies: 02.4.05 – Hours Worked, Non-Exempt, 02.4.12 – Exempt vs. Non-Exempt, 02.4.42 – Minimum Wage, and 02.4.52 – Overtime Pay.

Title IX Office focuses on healthy relationships in February

2017 BCM BeWell Biometric Screening registration is open

Registration for the 2017 BCM BeWell Biometric Screening is now open. To view the schedule and instructions on how to register, visit the BCM BeWell Biometric Screening page. Benefits-eligible employees who complete a screening and their 2017 Vitality Health Review by Nov. 25 will receive 2,000 BCM BeWell Vitality Points. For additional questions, email wellness@bcm.edu.

Nominations open for DeBakey Research Awards

Nominations are being accepted for the Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Excellence in Research Awards recognizing Baylor faculty who have made the most significant published scientific contribution to clinical or basic biomedical research during the past three years. Awardees receive a commemorative medallion and $5,000 to support their research. The deadline to nominate is Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Find nomination guidelines and instructions online.

Login to your Doximity profile and vote for Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in your area of specialization. Voting ends Feb. 28.
