Britton and Buck participate in NAS workshop

Dr. Robert Britton and Dr. Buck Samuel, both of molecular virology and microbiology, participated in a workshop organized by the National Academy of Sciences that included leaders from the microbiome field and highlighted utility of non-mammalian systems in microbiome research, including C. elegans (the focus of the Samuel lab) and mini-bioreactor arrays (Britton lab). The workshop, "Animal Models for Microbiome Research: Advancing Basic and Translational Science," can be viewed online or through a webcast.

Kane honored with thoracic surgery fellowship

Dr. Lauren Kane, assistant professor of surgery and pediatrics, received the Carolyn E. Reed Traveling Fellowship from the Thoracic Surgery Foundation and Women in Thoracic Surgery. The annual award provides support for clinically established female thoracic surgeons to travel to another institution for the purpose of learning a new skill or technology. Kane is the first congenital heart surgeon to be awarded the fellowship. In addition, Kane was named secretary and treasurer of the Women in Thoracic Surgery organization at the Society of Thoracic Surgery meeting in January.

Musher presents at pancreatic cancer symposium

Dr. Benjamin Musher, assistant professor of medicine, was a presenter at the Leo and Anne Albert Pancreatic Trials Symposium, held in January in San Francisco, where he discussed a Phase I trial that has recently opened at Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center using a novel oncolytic virus combined with chemotherapy in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Baylor/Baylor St. Luke's is the only site enrolling patients for this study. Find more information online.

Utay honored as outstanding educator

Joshua Utay, assistant professor of allied health sciences and assistant director of didactic education for the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program, will receive the 2017 Outstanding Educator Award from the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists. The award recognizes educators who have demonstrated unique didactic or laboratory skills that create a positive and permanent impression on students. It will be presented at the academy's annual meeting in Chicago March 3.

Tickets to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are now on sale in the Office of Communications, main Baylor, Suite 176B. Emergency medicine ACLS/BLS Certification Program

The Department of Emergency Medicine will offer ACLS-BLS Program recertification courses Feb. 11 and Feb. 25 at 9 a.m. on the main Baylor campus. The AHA-certified program is $135 for ACLS or $175 for ACLS and BLS combined. Skills verification is also offered during the course. Baylor part of statewide CPR training Feb. 11-12

The Texas Two Step, a collaborative CPR training effort organized by all 11 medical schools in Texas, including Baylor, will take place Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12, at various locations in Houston and across the state. Participants will learn how to act quickly in the event of cardiac emergencies by following two easy steps: 1) Call 911 and 2) Initiate hands-only CPR. Find locations and other information online.

Register for Feb. 25 symposium on Tourette syndrome

Registration is open for the Texas Tourette Symposium: What Makes Them Tic, Feb. 24 at the United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive. The symposium, directed by Dr. Joohi Jimenez-Shahed, includes a healthcare professional track for physicians from various specialties, nurses, residents and fellows and a public track for patients, parents and educators. Baylor's Super Bowl connections

- Did you know we have a Super Bowl Champion amongst us? Dr. Mark Adickes, chief of the division of sports medicine at Baylor, had a successful NFL career before becoming an orthopedic surgeon and won the Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins for the 1991 season. See his story here

Be sure to check out the virtual reality exhibit featuring the smart pod innovation from Baylor Global Initiatives as well as virtual reality displays highlighting Texas Children's Hospital and Texas Heart Institute, featuring Baylor faculty members Dr. Chester Koh and Dr. Billy Cohn.

Summer internship program

Human resources will offer its summer internship program from June 5 - Aug. 4. The unpaid program is for rising high school seniors and college and graduate students to enhance their personal development and their understanding of the College and its affiliates. Interested departments should establish goals that meet their own needs and the interests of the intern. Email adminintern@bcm.edu if you would like to host an intern(s) for the summer.

Recycling contest starts Feb. 5, lab coat recycling results

Baylor is one of more than 400 university campuses competing in RecycleMania from Feb. 5 – April 1. Help Baylor reduce waste (and win the contest!) by requesting personal sized recycling bins for your office, ensuring cans, plastics (Nos. 1, 2 and 5) and paper are recycled into the correct bins and recycling pipette tip boxes and other accepted lab materials. For more information, email Gabi De la Rosa. In other recycling news, the Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program held its first lab coat and scrubs recycling collection event in October. It was a great success, with more than 200 pounds of lab coats and scrubs collected during the weeklong event. All scrubs collected were donated to the Beacon, a nonprofit organization that helps Houston's poor and homeless population.
