Sifers invited as conference speaker

Dr. Richard SifersDr. Richard Sifers was an invited speaker at a conference, Environmental Drivers of Aging: Proteostasis, Metabolism and Signaling, at Northwestern University in Chicago Jan. 12. Sifers, professor of pathology & immunology and director of operations for the Center for Drug Discovery, spoke on "Functional Expansion of Proteostasis in the Vertebrate."

Correction: Atmar serves as ID chief at Ben Taub

Dr. Robert AtmarAn item in last week's Newslink about Dr. Thomas Giordano's appointment as chief of the section of infectious disease in the Department of Medicine incorrectly stated that Giordano serves as section chief at Ben Taub Hospital. Dr. Robert Atmar, professor of medicine, is the infectious disease section chief at Ben Taub, and will continue to serve in that role. He had been serving as interim section chief for the Department of Medicine before Giordano's appointment.

Jan. 31: Houston Premedical Academy Symposium

The 18th annual Houston Premedical Academy Symposium is Wednesday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. Students who participate in the academy, a collaboration of the DeBakey High School for Health Professions, the University of Houston and Baylor, will present posters and oral presentations highlighting research conducted last summer, with a keynote talk at 1 p.m. by Dr. Rayne Rouse, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology

Save the date: Esophageal Surgical Conference hosted by Baylor

In its inaugural year, this conference is designed for the wide spectrum of generalists and specialists who diagnose and manage esophageal-related diseases. Didactic talks, panel discussions and Q&A sessions will delve into diagnostic and interventional strategies for gastroesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, Barrett's esophagus and esophageal cancer. Conference dates are Feb. 22 - 24 at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston. More information and registration available online.

This includes frequent hand-washing, possibly wearing masks for clinical employees and staying home if ill. Looking for some quick information on billing compliance? The Office of Compliance now offers short informational recordings on various billing topics from chief complaint to how to obtain a history when a patient can't communicate and more. Integrity Hotline outage for maintenance

The company that provides the Baylor College of Medicine Integrity Hotline will be upgrading its system and will temporarily shut down for maintenance on the evenings of Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27. During this time, no new cases will be able to be reported via the Integrity Hotline phone. If you have any incident that needs to be reported during this time, please contact your supervisor, department or school administrator. The Integrity Hotline will be available Sunday, Jan. 28.

BCM BeWell news: Weight Watchers meetings

Are you interested in joining Weight Watchers? Complete this survey to let the BCM BeWell team know when you are available to attend a workplace meeting. For groups of 15 or more, meetings can be held in your building. Volunteers need for study on immune response

Healthy volunteers are needed for a study to test a new drug to increase the body's natural immune response, which can provide stronger protection against infections. Eligible volunteers must be male, between the ages of 18 to 40 years and must not have had the flu vaccine within the last 30 days or the tetanus-diphtheria vaccine in the last 5 years. The study will include three clinic visits over a six-week period at the Jamail Specialty Care Center and telephone follow-ups, standard blood work-up and a physical and psychiatric exam. Participants will be compensated up to $400. Interested? Call 713-798-6463.
