Desai’s books recognized by AAMC

Two books authored by Dr. Samir Desai, assistant professor of medicine, “Medical School Scholarships, Grants & Awards: Insider Advice on How to Win Scholarships,” and “The Successful Match: 200 Rules to Succeed in the Residency Match,” were recognized recently by the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Student Affairs. The group identified the books as high-value resources in its GSA Performance Framework. The Group on Student Affairs addresses issues in medical school admissions, student financial aid, medical student diversity, student affairs and student records at all member medical schools.

Jarjour named to pediatric council

Dr. Imad Jarjour, associate professor of pediatrics and neurology, was appointed to the Council of Pediatric Subspecialties by the Child Neurology Society to represent child neurology. The mission of the council is to advance child health through communication and collaboration within its network of pediatric subspecialties and liaison organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics.

Khavari named urology scholar

Dr. Rose Khavari, adjunct assistant professor of urology, was named a 2016 American Urological Association/European Association of Urology Academic Exchange Program Scholar. The program identifies future leaders in urology and supports the sharing of knowledge and experience. Khavari will travel to various institutions in Europe in March to discuss developments in reproductive medicine science.

Hotez to talk on Zika Jan. 25

In light of recent headlines and CDC travel advisories, Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, will give a general overview of Zika virus on Monday, Jan. 25, at 12:15 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The event is open to all Baylor College of Medicine faculty, staff and trainees.

DocTalk on back pain Jan. 28

The next DocTalk is Thursday, Jan. 28, at noon at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center at the McNair Campus, conference room B, with Dr. Rubin Bashir, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery. He’ll speak on causes of back pain and how to manage it. DocTalk is an informal series of lunchtime health talks led by a member of the Baylor faculty, followed by a Q&A. Eligible employees will receive BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Scientific publishing focus of Jan. 29 talk

Dr. Ivan Oransky, co-founder of Retraction Watch and a Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at New York University’s Arthur Carter Journalism Institute, will give a talk Friday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m. in room N315 of the Alkek Building, on “Retraction, Post-Publication Peer Review and Fraud: The Wild West of Scientific Publishing.” The lecture is hosted by Dr. Michael Beauchamp of the department of neuroscience.

Lecture on women in the academic workplace

Dr. Carol Rumack will present a lecture titled, “Women Don’t Ask” about women in the academic workplace on Feb. 5 from noon to 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. Rumack is the associate dean for graduate medical education at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and founding president of the American Association of Women Radiologists. She published an article on the same topic in the Journal of the American College of Radiology in 2015.

Traffic light installed at McNair Campus

The newest addition to Baylor’s McNair Campus is the installation of a traffic light at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Butler Boulevard. This new light will allow Baylor faculty, staff and trainees to safely commute through the area, including pedestrians walking between McNair and the DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Center.

Register for BCM BeWell challenge

BCM BeWell will start its second Getaway to Good Health challenge on Feb. 1 – this one a virtual walk from Panama City, Fla. (where the first challenge left off) to New York City. Participants must meet step requirements and complete a series of check points along the way. If you did not complete or participate in Getaway to Good Health – Panama City, you can still participate in Getaway to Good Health – New York City. Register online.
