Bushong presents at radiologic technologists meeting

Dr. Stewart Bushong, professor of radiology, recently was the keynote speaker and honoree at the 48th annual national convention of the Philippine Association of Radiologic Technologists in Baguio City, Philippines. Following the keynote talk, Bushong signed copies of his textbook, "Radiologic Science for Technologists," which is used by training programs throughout the Philippines.

Durgan receives NIH grant

Dr. David Durgan, assistant professor of anesthesiology, recently was awarded an R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for his project "Examining the role of gut dysbiosis in obstructive sleep apnea induced hypertension." This award will provide funding in the amount of $1.25 million over five years.

Erdman named PA fellow

Katherine M. Erdman, MPAS, PA-C, has been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She is the assistant director and academic coordinator of BCM's Physician Assistant Program and is an assistant professor in the School of Allied Health Sciences. She practices emergency medicine at Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital and has been a physician assistant for 22 years. The Distinguished Fellow program recognizes the exceptional contributions of physician assistants to the profession through professional achievement, leadership, professional interaction, learning and community service.

Med student Daniel Lewis publishes book on patient adherence

Fourth-year medical student Daniel J. Lewis recently published the book "Practical Ways to Improve Patient Adherence" with experienced adherence researcher Dr. Steven R. Feldman. The book examines the problem of poor adherence in dermatology and offers novel ways to get patients to use their medications and improve treatment outcomes. Available via paperback and e-book, the book can serve as a resource for physicians and allied health professionals of all specialties whose patients exhibit poor adherence.

McLaughlin to lead allied health deans group

Dr. Robert McLaughlin, dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences and associate professor in allied health and in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, has been elected to a three-year term as secretary of the Southern Association of Allied Health Deans at Academic Medical Centers, whose members include academic health centers in states served by the Southern Regional Education Board.

Jan. 9: Tacos with Teachers for faculty and trainees

The next Tacos with Teachers will be 7 to 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the Baylor Clinic 14th floor conference room with Dr. John Goss, professor of surgery and chief of abdominal transplantation. Tacos with Teachers breakfasts create a casual setting to meet with a faculty member for a discussion about their career path and tips to maintain connection, meaning and joy in their work, followed by a Q&A. Jan. 13-14: Clinical Research Methods course

Clinical Research Methods, a face-to-face beginner's course offered by the Department of Family and Community Medicine to train health professionals how to analyze simple data using SAS software and introduce concepts of research methodology, will be offered Jan. 13 – 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be led by Dr. Hamisu Salihu, professor of family and community medicine. Participants who register on or before Jan. 7 qualify for an early-bird rate of $500 for the course (33 percent off). Register online, and view feedback from previous sessions.

Jan. 16: Partnership evening program with sports medicine experts

Join the Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine for a special evening program and reception with Dr. Mark Adickes, chief of the Division of Sports Medicine and former NFL offensive lineman. The event takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Briar Club. Dr. Adickes and Dr. Rosalyn Nguyen, assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, will discuss recent advances in sports medicine and ways to prevent injury and stay in top shape as you age. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $50. RSVP by Jan. 10.

Jan. 17: Health Equity Grand Rounds welcomes AAMC diversity officer

Dr. David Acosta, chief diversity officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges, will present the inaugural Health Equity Grand Rounds of Baylor's Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity at 8 a.m. Jan. 17 in Cullen Auditorium. His talk is titled "Bridge over Troubled Waters: Crossing the Cultural Divide to Talk about Race & Racism in Academic Medicine and Scientific Institutions." A family medicine physician, Acosta served in diversity leadership roles at the UC Davis School of Medicine and the University of Washington School of Medicine before joining the AAMC. The event is open to all Baylor faculty, staff, students and trainees.

Join the Race for the Cure team with Carli Lloyd!

Join the Baylor College of Medicine team and run (or walk!) alongside soccer star and BCM brand ambassador Carli Lloyd on Jan. 27 at the Komen Race for the Cure. When you sign up, your dollars will be used for breast cancer education, research, advocacy and social support. Register online. BeWell event: Join the Baylor team for 2018 BP MS 150

Join Team BCM for the BP MS 150 bike ride April 28 – 29 as a rider or a volunteer. Participants will receive a free team jersey, catered lunches, massages and more! Riders should complete the internal cycling team registration and register for the BP MS 150 using the password: BCM. To volunteer, complete the volunteer registration. Department of Medicine moving to McNair Campus

The Department of Medicine administrative offices and clinics will move to the 8th floor of the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center on the McNair Campus this month. Clinics will move Jan. 12 – 15, and will start seeing patients in their new location on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Clinics moving include endocrinology, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, infectious diseases, nephrology, pulmonary/cystic fibrosis/sleep medicine, rheumatology and transition medicine. Administrative offices will start their move this week. All phone numbers will remain the same.

Faculty award nomination information

-Star Award for Excellence in Patient Care: The deadline to submit a portfolio for the Star Award for Excellence in Patient Care has been extended to Jan. 19. The award is open to full-time assistant professors, associate professors or professors engaged in patient care for at least 50 percent of their time and who have at least six years of clinical service as a Baylor faculty member. Candidates may self-nominate. However, all nominations must be approved and submitted to the selection committee by the faculty member's section chief, chair, medical director or center director. -Clark Service Award: The Office of Faculty Development is accepting nominations for the Clark Faculty Service Award through Jan. 12. Any Baylor faculty member may nominate a fellow faculty member whose exemplary service, with professionalism, has made significant and enduring contributions to the College but has not previously been recognized with an official BCM award. Criteria and nomination information are available online.

Call for science fair judges

Volunteers are needed to serve as judges for the 2017 Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan Middle School Science Symposium Competition, Jan. 13 – 16. Judges will score student projects, which will help determine which projects advance to the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston. Judging is conducted on the BCMAR campus. Volunteers should commit a minimum of one hour, or judging about six posters. Sign up online or contact Beatriz Perez-Sweeney for more information.

Stalking awareness info from Title IX Office

January is Stalking Awareness Month and over this month's editions of Newslink, Title IX Coordinator Mikiba Morehead will provide information to increase your understanding of stalking and how the College can help. Baylor defines stalking as "engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes that person (or a member of that person's family or household) to fear for their safety or the safety of others." Some examples include receiving unwanted calls, texts, emails and gifts. Learn more on the Baylor Title IX website. Need Help?
