Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital
St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is the home of the world-renowned Texas Heart Institute. Founded in 1962 by Dr. Denton Cooley, THI has become one of the premier cardiovascular centers in the country. Since its inception, THI physicians have performed more than 200,000 heart catheterizations and more than 31,000 cardiology procedures as well as more than 100,000 open heart procedures. Since 1972, over 800 heart transplants have been performed at THI, making it the third largest heart transplant program in the country.
In addition to its prominence in Texas, THI has gained world recognition as one of the foremost cardiac centers in the world. In its annual survey of "America's Best Hospitals," U.S. News & World Report has ranked the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital among the nation's top ten heart centers for the 18th consecutive year.
Anesthesiology faculty at the THI provide both operative anesthesia care and post-operative critical care services. Full-time faculty are fellowship-trained in CV Anesthesiology and/or Critical Care Anesthesiology. They provide teaching services to medical students, residents and fellows in management of routine cardiac, thoracic and vascular cases, as well as complex thoracic aortic reconstruction and hypothermic circulatory arrest. A full range of ventricular assist devices is employed, and heart and lung transplants are performed in the unit. The service offers contemporary technology, including EEG monitoring, intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography and aggressive invasive monitoring.
