Texas Children's Hospital

Texas Children's Hospital, one of the nation's premier tertiary pediatric facilities, is a 456-bed health care facility providing not only comprehensive clinical care, but also innovative research focused on the pediatric patient. More than 20,000 anesthetics are performed at TCH each year. All of the faculty are specially trained in pediatric anesthesiology and are board-certified or in the board certification process. A number of the faculty have additional board certification in pediatrics and critical care medicine.

Anesthesia faculty and residents care for pediatric patients undergoing a vast array of procedures including all types of elective surgery, liver transplantation, conjoined twin separation, and major neurosurgical, orthopedic, and plastics operations. Remote site anesthesia activities include cardiac catheterization and sedation for a variety of interventional and radiographic techniques. Weekly conferences include departmental grand rounds, presentation of core material for residents, and morbidity and mortality conferences.

Clinical investigation includes interactions among faculty from anesthesiology and other departments within Texas Children's Hospital. Ongoing clinical investigations include the effect of anesthetics on myocardial function among children with congenital heart disease, changes in pulmonary function and optimizing mechanical ventilation for children undergoing heart surgery.

A pediatric pain consultation service and subspecialty pediatric cardiovascular anesthesiology are also prominent parts of our capabilities.
