Message from the Chief Residents

On behalf of the 74 residents in our department, we welcome you to Baylor College of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology!  BCM is located in the largest and most advanced medical center in the world; our department is fortunate to be able to provide training in this remarkable center.  Our affiliated hospitals are world-renown institutions that care for a most diverse patient population. After completing your residency at BCM, you will not only have exceeded all case requirements as outlined by the ACGME, you will feel comfortable in a host of different and challenging clinical situations.

At BCM, our residents rotate through:

  • Ben Taub General Hospital General Hospital: Ben Taub is a large public hospital and one of the busiest level-one trauma hospitals in the country. Here, our residents rotate through the general operating rooms and obstetric services.
  • Texas Heart Institute: Recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation's top centers for cardiology and heart surgery, BCM residents rotate through cardiovascular anesthesia here.
  • Texas Children's Hospital: Ranked in the top ten pediatric hospitals in the country by U.S. News and World Report, our residents rotate through pediatric anesthesia here.
  • M.D. Anderson Cancer Center: MDACC is one of the top cancer centers in the world; BCM residents rotate through its critical care medicine and acute pain services.
  • The Methodist Hospital: Home to the Michael E. DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, Methodist is one of the nation's largest private non-profit hospitals. Our residents rotate through Methodist for critical care medicine, regional anesthesia, and cardiac anesthesia.
  • Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center: The VAMC is one of the largest VA hospitals in the country, and our residents rotate through the general operating rooms and on the chronic pain services.

Every year, our department hosts one of the nation's premier obstetric anesthesia conferences (TACO), and our all-fellowship-trained obstetric anesthesia faculty are national leaders in advanced airway management.

Our department also offers clinical and basic science research opportunities. Residents are encouraged to join the Clinical Scientist Track during their last year of training. This track affords a 6-month block of basic science research to interested residents.

We recognize that life extends beyond the operating room doors, and there are a host of activities to welcome residents to our department. Whether we are coming together for a barbeque at Dr. Raty's house, gathering for a potluck dinner, or attending a Houston Astro's Baseball game, we are always a collegial group!

Furthermore, as one of the largest cities in the United States, Houston affords its residents endless activities, fantastic restaurants, great shopping, exciting nightlife, and sports teams.  Despite its size, Houston remains affordable. Some of our residents buy homes, while others live in apartment complexes, townhouses, or high rise buildings.  Houston is friendly; you'll feel at home as soon as you arrive!

Once BCM residents complete their training, they are prepared for life after residency. Many pursue fellowship or academic careers; others enter private practice. Ultimately, Baylor residents leave with the tools to become excellent clinicians and leaders in anesthesiology. Come see for yourself; we would be thrilled to welcome you to our BCM family!

Sincerely,

Emily Weisberg and Dan Ellis
