How often are residents on call?
Call frequency varies with rotation site, but on average residents take four to five calls per month. Most residents average two weekends off per month.
How many hours do residents work each week?
Residents work between 60-65 hours per week on average. Resident work hours vary between different rotations and clinical sites.
How much time do residents get for vacation?

How much time do residents get for meetings?
Starting during the CA-1 year, in addition to vacation time, residents are allowed one week of meeting time. The department supports travel to professional meetings for CA-2s and CA-3s as per department policy

Houston has a lower cost of living than other major metropolitan areas. In fact, 60-70 percent of the residents in our department own their own homes.
Departmental supplemented benefits include an annual parking allowance, one-time technology allowance, white coats, and textbooks for the PGY1 - PGY2 classes. In addition, a meeting allowance and bonuses are given according to academic performance.
How does the application process work?
The department begins to interview residents in early November. All interested applicants are encouraged to complete their file by Nov. 1. Applicants should submit the requested documentation to the Electronic Residency Application Service. Please refer to the AAMC web site information on ERAS (www.aamc.org/students/eras).
Once the information is received, invitations to interview will be emailed to qualified applicants.
Each applicant is required to have a completed application file including:
- ERAS Application
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement
- Dean's Letter
- Medical School Transcript
- Letters of Recommendation (3)
- USMLE Scores to Date
The Application Process for International Medical School Graduates is the same as above. In addition, IMG must have at least one year of clinical experience in an accredited program within the United States to be considered for an interview. IMG applications must include a valid ECFMG certificate and the original and translated medical school diploma. Other documents may be requested.
