Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the Anesthesiology residency training program at Baylor College of Medicine in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas.

The BCM Anesthesiology residency program conforms to the requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology. U.S. medical school graduates applying for categorical or advanced track positions must register with the National Residency Matching Program (Match). Information regarding requirements for the Match is located at www.nrmp.org.

Ten or more categorical positions are offered through the Match. When available, a small number of Advanced Track positions (PGY-2/CA-1) are offered outside of the Match. Advance Track applicants must show evidence of clinical training in a Clinical Base year at an approved program. Recommendations for the 12 months of Clinical Base training include a transitional year, internal or emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery or any of the surgical subspecialties, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice or any combination which has been approved by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Application Procedure

The application deadline is November 1. Applications must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) which is a program of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Baylor College of Medicine requires all applicants to meet the terms for a Physician-in-Training permit or Texas state license as outlined by the Texas Medical Board at www.tmb.state.tx.us. Recruited physicians must obtain either a permit or license prior to entering the program.

The ERAS application includes the following items. No additional items are required for the initial application.

  • USMLE transcript*
  • Letters of Recommendation (a minimum of 3)

*USMLE Step 1 scores of 210 and above are considered more competitive. Passing the exams on the first attempt is required. Step 2 is recommended but not required at the time of application for recent medical graduates. Steps 2 and 3 must be passed prior to beginning PGY-2.

International medical school graduates
In the addition to the above, IMGs are required to have completed, or be in the process of completing, one year of clinical training (PGY-1) in the United States in an ACGME-accredited program. IMGs must have the documents necessary for a J-1 visa, have permanent residence, or hold a green card at the time of application. Applications are accepted through ERAS during the Fall/Winter of the internship year to be considered for PGY-2 positions outside the Match beginning the following July. More information for IMGs is provided by the ECFMG at www.ecfmg.org.

Interviews
The Department of Anesthesiology Residency Selection Committee reviews applications and begins extending invitations in November.
