From May 30 to June 6, Dr. Nancy Glass led a team of 34 people to Antigua, Guatemala to perform much-needed pediatric surgery and dental care. On the team were a number of TCH employees as well as BCM anesthesiologists.
Dr. Robert Power, Dr. Toyin Olutoye, and Dr. Glass performed the pediatric anesthesia cases, along with Dr. Maria Lozano-Gorena and Dr. Adam Stone. Dr. Lozano-Gorena is a former BCM medical student and BCM anesthesia resident. Dr. Stone is a UTMB anesthesia resident who began a pediatric anesthesia fellowship July 1.
The team performed 72 surgeries, including general pediatric surgical procedures, repairs of congenital hip dislocations, and several dental restorations on the multiply-handicapped children and young adults who live in the Franciscan hospital where the team worked. In addition, TCH pediatrician/geneticist Dr. Daryl Scott worked with Guatemala's ONLY geneticist to see children in a clinic for children with birth defects.
