Description of Research

TREK-1 is a member of the two-pore domain potassium channels (K2P). The K2P channels were discovered by searching for genes with homology to the highly conserved potassium-selective pore domain. TREK-1, highly expressed in the central nervous system, appears to be involved with a number of important functions including depression, neuroprotection, and the anesthetic action of volatile anesthetics. While there have been limited reports that TREK-1 is expressed in heart and arteries, the role for TREK-1 in the cardiovascular system is not understood. My aim is to investigate the role of TREK-1 in the cardiovascular system, especially in the cerebral circulation.
