Mission Statement
The mission of the Scott Department of Urology is to serve society as a preeminent academic urology department by providing compassionate, state-of-the-art patient care, comprehensive medical education, and an outstanding program of biomedical research.
Education & Training Programs
Academic activity in the Scott Department of Urology is oriented around three separate but interrelated groups: medical students, urology residents, and postgraduate fellows. The teaching program is a complementary process combining clinical hands-on experience with an active, in-depth, and varied program of conferences and teaching rounds.
Medical students form an integral part of the teaching activities and can be found on the urology services of both our public and private hospitals and in preceptor electives in our clinical offices.
The Scott Department of Urology offers a six-year residency program specifically tailored for urological training that integrates general surgery, surgical subspecialties, general urology, and urological subspecialties with an academic year of focused laboratory investigations. The surgical subspecialties include plastic, pediatric, and gynecologic surgery, while the urological subspecialties include infertility, neurourology, and endourology.
The department also offers funded fellowships in the areas of gene therapy, male reproductive medicine and surgery, bladder cancer, ultrasound, and pediatrics.
Research
The Scott Department of Urology is a leader among Baylor's clinical departments in its commitment to research activities. Members of the department are involved in research in basic science laboratories, in translational research, and in clinical research, including an extensive Clinical Trials Program.
The National Cancer Institute recognized the Scott Department of Urology and Baylor College of Medicine for excellence in prostate cancer research with the designation Matsunaga-Conte Prostate Cancer Research Center in 1992, and the department has continued to gain recognition and funding for its many research activities. Among them is The Program Project for the Study of Genetics and Male Infertility, funded by a grant of more than 5 million dollars for work in the only such center in the country. One of the most recently funded programs is a Multidisciplinary K12 Urologic Research Career Development Program to prepare physicians and basic scientists for careers as independent investigators in the area of translational urologic and endocrine research.
Patient Care
The full-time clinical faculty of the Scott Department of Urology provides patient care in several clinics and centers.
