Mission Statement

The Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics is a highly interactive department with ongoing research in the areas of structure and function of ion channels and transport proteins, redox signaling, signal transduction, drug and gene delivery, and the development of biosensors for genetic diagnosis. A major emphasis of our department is the study of the mechanisms of human diseases, including cardiovascular disease, skeletal muscle disease (myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, malignant hyperthermia, central core disease), motor neuron disease (ALS and spinal muscular atrophy), cystic fibrosis, asthma, and cancer. We are involved in Phase I clinical trails for treatment of cancer. We offer training at the graduate level to prepare students for either academic or industry biotechnology careers.
